Last week, Ryan and Belinda attended the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) conference in sunny Brisbane. The focus of this was to network, build relationships, and explore new product innovations and opportunities.

During the conference, we had some discussions on upcoming small package product launches, including strategies for their successful introduction into the domestic market. We also collaborated with equipment and product manufacturers to brainstorm improvements in product shipping efficiency and user experience for home use products.

While in town, we took the opportunity to visit the main distribution centre, assess current manufacturing processes, and explore the potential for incorporating new nitrogen technology into our product lines.

Welcome First name / fellow lawn addict to another instalment of “The Fulcrum”.
Now onto today's topic. It might be a bore for some of you, but for some of us, it is life. Today we are talking about looking after our cool-season grasses during the winter. Grasses such as Rye, Fescue, Kentucky Blue, and Bent grass all require different requirements in the cold weather than our warm season varieties.
Oversow.
Hopefully, you have already oversown your lawn to help it thicken up and give it a fuller, healthier appearance. Doing so now, especially in Victoria, may be a challenge as we are starting to get frosts.

Removing frosts & dew.
It is important to take note of frosts and, if possible, remove them. A light water early in the morning as the sun is hitting your lawn can speed up the melting process.

All-liquid diet.
The use of liquids allows us direct access to the plant. Getting the nutrients where they need to be. Setting us up for a better spring and summer. The biggest difference between our grass varieties is the nutrient balance and formulation we give them. Something high in potassium, such as Fertech Refine, would be the way to go. Potassium is responsible for increased resistance to most (not all) turf issues.  Adding some kelp, with its added benefits and growth promoting compounds, will also help.
For some colour, an iron supplement is also a good way of getting your grass to "pop."  Super iron, applied as a foliar, will help give your turf a darker colour.

Aeration
Like most grasses, our cool-season grasses like oxygen in the soil as well. This allows the roots to keep moving as much as possible and has the added benefit of helping to prevent disease and improve water filtration. As our cool-season grasses continue to grow, this can be done all through winter. I would do this with a solid tine as opposed to a corer, as too much damage will still harm the grass.

Leaf Removal.
The key to plant growth is sunlight; anything blocking that light is detrimental to growth. Leaf litter is one of those where it accumulates very quickly and can get out of control just as fast.

Maintain mowing height.
Unlike our warm-season counterparts, we do not have to change mowing heights. However, as we usually keep our lawns longer, it’s not necessary. Usually around 25mm+ is the way to go. They can be kept shorter, but that would increase your inputs (fertilizer, etc.).

Watering.
It is still important to maintain a certain level of moisture in the soil while our grasses are still growing. This ensures more effectiveness from our liquid fertilisers and any herbicides that get applied. Although this is not usually the case, we may need to stay on top of our watering and wetting agent applications during winter this year.
