Godfrey Barclay was very much a part of the Transvaal section climbing scene from the time he joined the Club on 1 August 1957 until he and his family moved to New Zealand in the early 1990s where he continued his love of the mountains by exploring and hiking the many trails in that country.
The Magaliesberg, Drakensberg and Wolkberg, were some of Godfrey’s favourite climbing/hiking/camping destinations. He also loved the Transkei and organized many a hiking holiday in that part of the country.
In 1990 Godfrey phoned me and said “Would you like to do the Milford Track – there is a 2-year waiting list.” Needless to say, I didn’t hesitate to say yes.
In 1992 Godfrey and Ann Barclay, Ted and Anne Adcock, Ann Van der Riet and Merv and Jean Prior joined up in the small village of Te Anau on New Zealand’s South Island and set off for an experience of a lifetime. The Milford Track must be one of the most beautiful walks in the world. We were lucky enough to have perfect weather with only one night of rain which resulted in a spectacular display of waterfalls the following morning.
The ultimate gentleman, Godfrey was always cheerful and helpful in the mountains which he loved and in life generally.
Rest in peace Godfrey, we shall miss you.
– Ann van der Riet.
Godfrey’s son Chris told us that Godfrey, at age 95, was still living alone, walking 2 kilometres a day, and looking after some sheep. He died peacefully in his sleep.
The photograph is one of Godfrey taken a while ago with a friend at his favourite Japanese restaurant in his hometown of New Plymouth, New Zealand.
