Japanese beetles have emerged and are feeding on the more than 300 species of plants and trees they prefer. When Japanese beetles feed, they emit pheromones that draw in more beetles to feed and mate. This is part of the reason why traps can be ineffective control (drawing more beetles in) and why control of small numbers of beetles by handpicking can be highly effective.

Our Tech Team members recently planted a Shumard oak, Quercus shumardii, at the governor's residence! The location and species selection at Cedar Crest followed a plan the Kansas Forest Service developed for the site. Shumard oak is native to eastern Kansas and is a member of the red oak family.
