Hey First name / friend

Are you still trying to find your day to day stride with summer?

When our routines shift, it can impact our health in surprising ways. I wanted to share a bit about how our bodies respond to these changes, especially when it comes to stress and its effect on our weight.

With the kids home for summer break, many of us are juggling new schedules, finding ways to keep everyone entertained, and perhaps even squeezing in some extra work to enjoy that much-anticipated vacation. It’s an exciting time, but it can also be pretty stressful. Our bodies respond to stress by releasing hormones like cortisol and insulin, and understanding how these work can help us manage our health better.

Cortisol is often called the "stress hormone" because it's released in higher amounts during stressful situations. Imagine you’re trying to meet a deadline at work while your kids are asking for snacks every five minutes – your body perceives this as a stressful situation and goes into "fight or flight" mode. In this state, cortisol levels spike, preparing your body to either face the challenge or run from it.

Meanwhile, insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, can also be affected by stress. When cortisol levels are high, your body tends to release more insulin. This combination can lead to an inflammatory state, where your body holds onto fat and promotes weight gain. It’s a biological response meant to help us survive in times of danger, but in today’s world, it can often be more of a hindrance than a help.

For instance, after a long day of balancing work and family, you might find yourself craving sugary or high-carb foods. This is your body’s way of seeking quick energy to cope with the stress, but it can lead to a cycle of elevated cortisol and insulin levels, creating the perfect environment for weight gain.

It’s important to find ways to manage stress and keep these hormone levels in check. Whether it’s through exercise, meditation, or simply taking a few minutes for yourself each day, small changes can make a big difference. And remember, it’s okay to ask for help or delegate tasks – you don’t have to do everything on your own.
