Studio Update - July 2024 |
|
If you have a passion for collecting, holding, hoarding, and reading books, you are a Book Dragon, and this update is for you! *** A very long time ago, I remember the excitement of going to the library and checking out as many books possible to satisfy my summer reading addiction. My favorites were Nancy Drew (girl detective), books about any type of art, and the occasional publication about rocks, flowers, or creatures who roam the night. đŚ These days I can't quiet my mind long enough to sit with a book. So, instead I listen to audio books on my phone while multi-tasking. Things have changed, and not necessarily in a good way. Just last week an artsy friend gave me a stack of old library cards. You know, the old âcard catalogâ ones from back in the day? She was cleaning out her art stash and thought I could use them. It certainly made my day! I hope to make a series of collages featuring those cards very soon. |
|
Meanwhile, here are a few of the books I have read (and loved) over the years. All that's missing is a Nancy Drew mystery! |

inspiration everywhere (for Artsy Book Dragons) |

Aliceâs Haunted Little Bookshop in Mystic, Connecticut is a small bookshop inspired by the Victorian library of Lewis Carroll. It is a home for special, strange, and forgotten books, many of which never had a chance to be on a best-seller list or in a traditional bookstore. (Which means, they just might stock my collage books. đ) |

The Open Book in Wigtown, Scotland is both an Airbnb rental AND a bookshop that lets travelers from around the world live out their bookseller fantasies. |
|
And finally, in the United Kingdom, The Poetry Pharmacy is the worldâs first walk-in poetry pharmacy. Instead of sleeping pills and multivitamins, customers are offered prescriptions of rhyming verse written by their favorite poet. |

I recently found a Foxglove plant at my local greenhouse and had to purchase it, of course. Foxglove is often grown as an ornamental plant due to its vivid flowers which range in color from various purple tints through pink and white. All parts of the plant are toxic, especially the roots. I think itâs odd there is no warning label to this effect on the plant. But then again, I donât usually eat the flowers in my yard, so I suppose I shouldnât worry about it. Foxglove is one of the âsuspectsâ in my âWicked Plant Art" collection. The others are Belladonna, Dieffenbachia, Hellebore, Hemlock, Henbane, Hydrangea, Mandrake, Mullein, Oleander, Poison Ivy, Poppy, Rue, Stinging Nettle, Venus Flytrap, Voodoo Lily, Wolfsbane, Wormwood, and Yarrow. You can see them all at the Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha from October 4 through November 12. No worries if you can't make it to the exhibition because I'll figure out a way to share them here in my September or October update. |
