July 2024

A Message from the Executive Director
This term, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) dropped decisions that criminalized homelessness, created unprecedented immunity for Presidents, enabled gerrymandering, let January 6 insurrectionists off the hook, and completely undermined federal agencies’ ability to interpret the laws they administer. Many rulings ended with the familiar conservative-liberal, 6-3 split in decisions on matters of great public importance. This term reinforced the perception of the American people that its decisions are politics by other means.

It’s difficult not to feel defenseless when all of this is happening around us, but each of us does have power-- by using our voice and our vote

Using your voice and your vote means:
  1. Making a plan to vote. If getting to the polls is difficult with your schedule, vote early. Historically, US physicians voted at lower rates than the general population in elections and we need to change that! This isn’t about being partisan, nor is it telling people how to vote. It is about using your voice to select candidates that reflect your values.
  2. Use your voice and engage in community forums, write an Op-Ed on something that is meaningful to you and your patients, reach out to your elected representatives, and volunteer on election day for your choice of political representatives.
Your voice can be a source of hope in difficult times. Your voice and your vote can be used to create change. Remember, DFA is here to help you use your voice to be the best advocate you can be for the things you care about.
In solidarity,

Angie Bakke, MBA
Executive Director

On June 7th, Doctors for America (DFA) hosted an event with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention featuring over 50 white coats, 30 health professionals, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff at the White House. Others were also invited and attended including Brady (This is Our Lane), Scrubs Addressing the Firearm Epidemic, American College of Preventive Medicine, American College of Emergency Physicians, as well as nurses, paramedics, EMTs, and mental health practitioners. The purpose of the event was to elevate the critical role of health care professionals in combating gun violence by promoting safe storage practices advocating for measures aimed at reducing gun-related injuries and fatalities within communities nationwide.

At the event, DFA released a pledge urging health care professionals to sign on and make a commitment to educate their patients on safe storage practices whenever there is a chance to do so. Please sign the pledge and share it widely with your networks.
