July is Disability Pride Month in honor of the adoption of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. I will admit to having a love-hate relationship with the word “disabled." Just like “elder,” the word isn't dirty- but people treat it that way.
We all have challenges, and I would love to live in a world where our diversity is celebrated. If necessity is the mother of invention, how much do we stand to learn from those with challenges that are different from our own? We could all move through life a little easier if we learned to be more adaptable.
The
Sunflower Program is another tool to help those with invisible disabilities. The Nashville Airport just made this program more accessible to anyone who may need a little (or a lot) extra help when traveling. Even if you don't need assistance, it's good to know that it's available.
In gratitude,
April
