Hi First name / friend!
Not long ago, a gentleman commented on one of my social media posts that the Bible was written by men. His goal in making this statement was to cast doubt on the authority of Scripture. After all, if we believe the Bible is God's Word, but it was really written by men, can we believe anything it says?
Let's give him the benefit of the doubt for just a moment. Let's ignore the fact that the Bible was recorded over a period of 1,500 years by more than 40 men in 3 different languages on 3 different continents yet somehow still manages to be one cohesive book.
Let's pretend that all of the prophecies in Scripture that have been fulfilled are merely a coincidence along with all of the historical and archeological finds that continue to support the truth of Scripture.
And let's disregard the sacrifices of the men who were witnesses to what the Bible claims and were willing to suffer imprisonment, torture, banishment, and death because they knew it was true and refused to deny it.
Let's say for the sake of argument that the Bible is just a book written by men. Does this really undercut the authority of Scripture?
From where is it okay to get our knowledge? Should we get it from professors who teach university courses? Should we get it from books we read on a specific subject? What about experiments that are orchestrated by scientists? Should our knowledge come from within ourselves?
Those knowledgeable professors who lecture in university classrooms are men (or women). The authors of the research books we read are men. The scientists who perform elaborate experiments are also men. And even gleaning wisdom from our own experience is learning it from man.
So even if you take away all divine authority from the Word of God, a feat that requires us to ignore very compelling evidence, the Bible is still no less credible than any other source of knowledge or wisdom available to us.
Claiming the Bible is a book written by men is a self-defeating argument because even that assertion came from a man. Don't allow a fallacy to derail your faith.
Oh, and the gentleman who commented on my post must have seen where I was going with my questions because he deleted our conversation instead of responding.
