HOW TO HELP YOUR KIDS’ SCHOOL
CENTER INDIGENOUS PEOPLES THIS THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and in classrooms around the country, kids will be exposed to untrue stories about Thanksgiving and harmful caricatures of our Indigenous friends. Many teachers may not mean to be disrespectful, but impact is always greater than intent.

Parents have so much power in the classroom, and we as a First Name Basis fam can help our kids’ teachers avoid these pitfalls and instead teach Thanksgiving in a respectful, inclusive way. Here are 6 sample letters to help you start the conversation with a teacher.

The First Name Basis account on Bookshop.com has links to dozens of books that are written by and/or about Indigenous Peoples. This list would be a great one to share with your kids’ teachers to help them learn more and to find children’s books that center Indigenous Peoples to include in their lesson plans.

With love,
