“Diving into creativity with giddy excitement and fearlessness!”
*POSSIBILITY*
“Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvellous.”
Bill Moyers
Possibility. What is possible? Do we limit ourselves because we feel like we ‘can’t’ do things, so we daren’t even try? Possibly.
We have labels, and we believe them.
So this week:
Think further - aim further - see further - what is actually possible?
Not probable, but possible. They are not the same!
With your creative thinking ANYTHING is possible. But wow that is sometimes overwhelming. Hence why these prompts should help.
If you’ve attended or watched the Business for Creativity Sessions, I always do a quick exercise at the beginning where we think of as many uses for a random object as possible. It helps to get our creative juices flowing and get us thinking ‘outside the box’.
I encourage crazy, ridiculous answers, but nonetheless, they are all POSSIBLE.
I admit, most of them are not PROBABLE 🤪, but they’re all definitely possible.
Is there ever a time if your life or business when you allow your thinking to go beyond your limitations?
Is there ever a time when you allow your thoughts to consider things outside of your natural ‘restrictions’? E.g. things which cost more than you have, which are not geographically, or physically possible for you?
Do you ever let yourself wander into a life of someone else with access to different resources etc? "What would xxx do?"
Even as I write this, I’m not sure how often I do it myself. Because it feels like a waste of time.
What’s the point in thinking about what I’d do if I had a budget of £10k for my marketing?
What’s the point of thinking about what I’d wear if I was presenting a talk to the Princess of Monaco?
What’s the point of considering how my podcast will go down with the Guinea Pig population of the Netherlands?
[OK, maybe the last one is a bit too ‘out there’! Or may be not!]
The point isthat:
…by allowing our minds to go further than we can realistically go, we open up even more possibilities for where we could actually go. And maybe there is way to use those ideas by bringing them back down to earth slightly and adapting them to fit our reality.
And if so, you have to admit, that you wouldn’t have got to that idea without spreading the net far and wide first.
Creative Thinking Prompts (w/c 15 July 2024)
So in a nut shell then, this week I’d like you think about what’s POSSIBLE.
Not what’s probable.
But what’s possible.
And go as far as your imagination can go.
…Then go further.
[To give it some proper scientific terms. This is DIVERGENT THINKING.]
And after you’ve done that, you can focus more on one or two of those ideas, bring them back into reality and use them to generate ideas which could really happen. This is CONVERGENT THINKING.
I think this is one of my favourite things about creativity. Nothing is off limits. So enjoy this week for that reason, if nothing else!
P.S. A heads up for the fast-approaching ☀️SUMMER SCHEDULE of Wonder Club☀️ - I'm away for the first half of August, so in place of the live sessions, I'll be sending an email instead.
There will emails for the Creativity for Business session on the 5th August, and the Creativity Unblocker on the 15th.
I'll be back for the Co-Creativity on the 21st so I look forward to seeing you all feeling fully refreshed after my trip away!
— Are you heading off to anywhere nice this summer? ☀️
“Wonder makes us more creative and more desirous of studying the world around us. It makes us humble, less materialistic, more generous, and better community members… Wonder makes us less stressed and feel like we have more time… Wonder quite simply makes us want to be better, more tolerant people.”(Parker, 2023)
