WEEKLY WONDERS: w/c 22 July 2024

Hi First name,
“Diving into creativity with giddy excitement and fearlessness!”
*BEING FEAR-LESS*
“Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvellous.”
Bill Moyers

Fearless and having less fear are two different things.

Fearless is void of any fear, which makes us not human really - we all have fears, and some are for good reason!

But fearing less is something that most of us could strive for, while acknowledging that some fear is ok.

❌ So don’t fear the blank page…
❌Don’t fear the workshop which you just ‘can’t do’…
❌Don’t fear the project you might get if only you were better…

Creatively speaking, we need to push boundaries - including our fear boundary - in order to develop our creative skills further and seek things that may scare us a little bit. It only has to be a little bit though - which is a comforting thought!

“Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties.”
Erich Fromm
  • A certainty is safe.
  • A certainty is something we already know.
And if we already know it, or have seen it, or know it already exists, then how does that enable progress? Creativity is uncertain, and we need to be ok with that.

Creative Thinking Prompts (w/c 22 July 2024)

This week think about:
What do I fear when it comes to being more creative?
This can be in anything: work, home-life or business.
  • Is it a fear of getting something wrong?
  • The fear of what people might think?
  • A fear of feeling daft, or embarrassed?
  • A fear that it will be a ‘waste of time’ and something with more certainty is simply the better option?
Consider your reasons for NOT pushing through that fear.

Then try to let that fear be a little bit less prominent in your thinking.

Think instead about the opposite to your fearful reasons. Pose the ‘But What if…’ versions and see if that lessens the fear.

Remember that:
We only ever need to travel a little out of our comfort zone
each time we become fearful.

After a while, our comfort zone will join us, and the cycle starts again.

Before you know it, you’re much further from your original
comfort zone than you ever thought possible.

Creativity is pushing boundaries. It’s about seeking out what makes you curious and asking questions which you don’t already know the answers to. With that can come fear. Fear of the unknown.

But without that fear, we’d be staying still, not progressing, not advancing, not exploring, and not feeling the joy of novelty in our creative lives.

So while I don’t think we can or should hope to be completely fearless, I think it’s worth trying to fear less.

I've used the ‘comfort zone’ small steps analogy in many ways over the years - it's so true don't you think?

“Wonder makes us more creative and more desirous of studying the world around us. It makes us humble, less materialistic, more generous, and better community members… Wonder makes us less stressed and feel like we have more time… Wonder quite simply makes us want to be better, more tolerant people.” (Parker, 2023)
