Getting ready for the
Summer Sketchbook Un-Slump
This 5 week series will officially begin next Friday but I wanted to share some warm up exercises that you can try in the meantime! Pick one or try all three.

The goal with these warm-ups is to simply take action! Getting started can sometimes be the hardest part--especially with a blank page staring back at you. I hope these exercises help us ease into this un-slump. (And if you're catching up on other prompts or want to rest, that's OK too!)

SEE WHAT YOU HEAR
  • Have your paper / sketchbook ready and opened to a blank page. Place your supplies near you so you can easily grab what you want.
  • Listen to this piece of music. I recommend closing your eyes for the first listen.
  • Draw / paint / sketch / collage what you hear. It can be shapes, patterns, colors, an image that comes to mind, abstract or realistic, what does this music make you see?

Tip: Play the music in the background while you work or listen to your favorite part(s) a few more times. Feel free to focus on only the music only or take inspiration from the lyrics as well.

I would really love for you to try this one! I think it will be so cool to see what we end up making after listening to the same thing!

1 MARK A DAY
  • Every day make 1 mark on the same piece of paper.
  • Interpret this however you'd like!
  • Try this for 5 to 7 days.
  • If you want to make more than 1 mark a day, feel free but 1 a day is a good and easy place to start!
Tip: Find inspiration in your day--what you did, how you feel, what you want to document, Consider the colors you use, the length of the mark, the pressure you use, curvy vs. angular lines, etc. Don't be afraid to make big marks, get messy, or use bright and bold colors! Try overlapping marks and building off of them or you can keep them all separate.

MAKE A SINGLE MARK
Last but not least, this is how we've warmed up in all the past un-slumps so it's an annual tradition to share this exercise :)
  1. Open your sketchbook to a blank page.
  2. Pick a random tool/medium. Choose a color that's jumping out at you.
  3. MAKE A MARK! That's it!
Tip: Don't overthink, just do it! Close your eyes if that helps. It's OK if it's not in the “right” spot or doesn't look exactly how you want it to. Let all of that go.

I'm looking forward to sharing the first prompt of the un-slump with you soon!

Have a great weekend!
