The grand opening event that almost blew the town away…literally! |
|
No one does a town gathering quite like Kurri! Despite the wild and windy weather, the community rugged up and descended upon Col Brown Rotary Park to celebrate the official opening of Kurri Kurri’s Town Centre & Col Brown Rotary Park on Tuesday morning.
Beautiful words were spoken about Col Brown’s legacy and his 40 years service to Rotary and the Kurri community. The Stage 1 town centre upgrades were jointly funded by all three levels of government (State Government $3.75 million, $1.7 million from the Federal Government, and $520,000 from Cessnock City Council). The $1.3 million upgrades to Col Brown Rotary Park were funded by State Government grants. Thank you to Cessnock City Council for hosting the event. It was freezing but fabulous, and it served as a timely reminder of what can be achieved when all levels of government work hand in glove to deliver for our community. Special thanks, as always, to the legends at Rotary Club of Kurri Kurri, who were on-site to warm the bellies of the shivering guests with their scrumptious Rotary sausage sandwiches - the cherry on top of a windy, but wonderful celebration of how magnificent our lil town is looking. |

Souper news! Slurp up some free soup tomorrow from 11am at St Paul's Anglican Church Hall. |

Speaking of warming up bellies, free soup is happening tomorrow (Friday, July 19) from 11am-2pm! Venture to St Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, Lang St who will be hosting The Soup Spot every Friday. I'll be moseying on down for my soup fix, so I hope to see you there! |

Jenny McCracken, one of my favourite 3D Illusionist mural artists, will be making a special appearance at the Kurry Curry & Arts Festival on Sunday, August 18… her 3D art display will leave you on cloud nine! |

I adore Jenny McCracken's iconic murals around town, especially the two most recent ones located at the entrance of the Visitor Information Centre. They are SO clever and enchanting. Jenny confirmed that she will be on-site at Col Brown Rotary Park for the Kurri Curry & Arts Festival on Sunday, August 18 from 10:30am to 2pm. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of what the full-scale interactive activation will look like - it's SOOOOOO good and guaranteed to rise to the occasion! Trust me, you won't want to miss it. Jenny is encouraging everyone to pose with the interactive 3D art display, and the result will leave you soaring high, no strings attached! Up, up and away… it's going to be a fabulous day! |

Don't miss Jenny's special full scale interactive 3D art display from 10:30am - 2pm on Sunday August 18, it's going to leave you on a high!! |

One of my pet peeves in life is having to put petrol in my car, first world problemo but nonetheless it makes me irrationally irritable, so this week's well deserved shout out goes to the legendary Luke at the Kurri Kurri Local Service Centre ( Ampol Australia) at 95 Northcote St, Kurri! Luke has been serving the community with a smile on his face for over 11 years as the fabulous driveway attendant at Kurri Kurri Local Service Centre Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. Judging by the reaction to our Facebook post about Luke, the community wholeheartedly agrees that he is truly the best and such an incredible asset to Kurri! Thank you, Luke, for filling the town with joy and our cars with fuel! |

Check out Starline Alpaca's for an up close and personal encounter with lots of wooly cute alpaca's and adorable farm animals surrounded by the most spectacular views…heaven! |
|
Starline Alpacas Farmstay Resort is around a 40 min drive from Kurri and it was heaven on earth for me…not so much for Liam who didn't fancy the alpacas gobbling grain off his mitts. We got there around 10:30am and those alpacas were super frisky for their feed! We were surrounded in no time and they took great delight trying to headbutt the bag of feed off my wrist. You can purchase food bags on-site for $8 to feed your new-found furry friends. It's definitely worth doing this (unless you're like Liam)! There is no need to book, just lob up at reception for entry (they were so lovely) to be delighted by the cutest donkeys, goats, alpacas, horses, cows, chicks and piggies. Congratulations to the deserving team at Starline Alpacas Farmstay Resort team who were recently awarded Excellence in Agriculture at the Singleton Business Awards. Highly recommend making the trek to experience this wholesome day out! +61 2 6579 1081 Day Visits Mon - Thurs | 10am - 4pm Fri - Sat | 9am - 5pm Sun | 9am - 3pm |

Off grid adventures in the Hunter! |
|
Peter and Cindy Newhouse from the YouTube Channel Newhouse On Wheels recently ventured to God's Country staying in their van on-site at the Abermain Bowling Club and spending time wandering around Kurri to check out the murals… you'll see some familiar sights from 5mins 20secs - 8mins 32secs. |

The library at your fingertips 24 hour/365 days a year |
|
To try and circuit break my relentless phone addiction/doom scrolling, I'm going to try to commit to reading a book a week and I'll recommend the worthy reads in future newsletters. So in the spirit of making this a cheap and cheerful exercise, I visited Kurri Library to get a library card (free and on-the-spot) and then downloaded the apps Borrow Box and Libby to check out the ebooks & audiobooks they had on offer to stream or download for free & on-demand 24/7. At first glance, Borrow Box feels like it is the more superior app for current book releases. They are both free to join, you just need your library card number and PIN number. The first book I have downloaded is Sally Hepworth's The Soulmate which was the July recco from the Blue Leaf Book Club - you can join their Facebook group here to learn more about the group, to check out what books they are reading and when they get together. |

Happy 1st Birthday to Blue Leaf Cafe and in exciting news, they have just announced a bubbly brunch!! |
|
Thank you for being such a wonderful addition to the community, serving up your delightful treats from the iconic Abermain Hotel! One of the things I miss about Sydney (trust me, it's not much!) is its vast array of delightful bottomless brunch options. Bubbles and brunch are two of my favourite joys in life, so news of one coming to our doorstep has made me giddy with glee! I cannot wait for this and will definitely be partaking in the bottomless option! |

We're tackling the important issues this week… Does anyone know how the hole got in this rock? It has Liam and I perplexed! |

Must Do: Ditch your dodgy mattresses at the Council's free mattress drop off this Saturday at the carpark at the corner of Merthyr & Barton Streets, Kurri (The HUB/Anytime Fitness carpark) Must Go To: See you at The Chelly from 6pm tomorrow evening (Friday, July 19) for a fun and festive time at the Wanderer's Old Boys & Gals Christmas in July. It's free to come along and everyone is encouraged to buy raffle tickets on the night from 6pm with all the money raised going to Strive For Autism Find of the week: Oooooft! I almost crashed my Jeep pulling into work when I spied this sexy machine casually parked in The Chelly BottleMart Driveway earlier this week… peachy perfection indeed! |
