WEEKLY WONDERS: w/c 12 August 2024

Hi First name,
“Summer wonderings - wherever you are!”
Summer is the time when we aim to get out and about, have ‘time off work’ and enjoy the warmer weather (although it doesn’t always pan out that way, does it!) so it seemed a good opportunity to focus our creative thinking on a different location each week…

w/c 12 August
*City-Dwelling Wonder*
Don't be afraid to explore the city. It is big for a reason.

Today we’re looking at things you may find in a built up area that you may be visiting during the summer.

There are so many things I could suggest you ‘notice’ but here’s just a single prompt (as promised) to get your creative thinking juices flowing and get your wonder-walk eagle eyes noticing…

Creative Thinking Prompt (w/c 12 August 2024)

Observe the interaction: ‘Man-made vs Nature’.

  • Is there a fight between the two?
  • Are they in harmony with one-another?
  • Look at colours - natural vs those brought in by humans. Is there any natural colour within a cityscape?
  • Has the architect or town-planner made allowances for nature?
  • Who has won, if it seems like a battle?
  • Who would you want to win?

“Divine nature gave the fields. Human art built the cities.”
Marcus Terentius Varro

Be it a big city, or a smaller town, or even in your local village - wherever humans have settled you can bring out this prompt and use it to wonder about the growing interaction between years of nature and the things that humans have ‘added’.

We often associate inspiration with nature (and rightly so!), but a cityscape can be just as inspiring!

P.S. If you fancy a post-summer trip to central Leeds, then don't forget to get booked on to our next Inspiration Day on 27 September.

“Wonder makes us more creative and more desirous of studying the world around us. It makes us humble, less materialistic, more generous, and better community members… Wonder makes us less stressed and feel like we have more time… Wonder quite simply makes us want to be better, more tolerant people.” (Parker, 2023)
