today is DAIQUIRI day

The daiquiri was brought to the U.S. in 1909 by U.S. naval officer Lucius Johnson, who introduced it to the army and navy club in Washington, DC.

The drink became popular in the 1940s due to World War II rationing, which made rum more accessible as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Good Neighbor policy.

The daiquiri's popularity also rose in Louisiana during the disco era

💌 Hey there, Jet Setters!

I'm not a big drinker, but if anything gets me to indulge, it is a frozen strawberry daiquiri on a hot day by the pool.

While in Bridgetown on a rum distillery tour, I won a shot from a $300 bottle of Mount Gay Rum. It was the best rum I've ever tasted.  To this day, I remember the local woman who taught me all about rum and how it figured into the slave triangle. It is one of the best tour excursions I've ever been on.

It's a great reminder I mentioned yesterday on my Instagram Series, “Today's Travel Tidbit,” that food and beverages have a special place in exploring local cultures.
