POV: It’s Sunday at 10 AM and I get a reminder, like I do every Sunday at 10 AM.

It says:

(See the typo I when I first made this reminder 3 years ago? I never changed it. Kinda on-brand?)

And, like every Sunday, I am either:

A) Very busy doing Mom Stuff or Business Stuff
B) Very tired from doing Mom Stuff and Business Stuff
C) Very lazy from being tired from doing Mom Stuff and Business Stuff

And I’ll be honest, *occasionally* I’m doing something fun too. But #realtalk, not as often as I’d like.

I think you can probably see where this is going, First name / friend.

Yerp. I don’t water the plants.

I mean, I used to water the plants. Every Sunday at 10 AM.

And my god, those things were thriving.

After years of wanting to be a Plant Mom, I’d finally found the right plants and put them in the right spots and watered them the right amount on the right schedule.

I even used this “Plant Soil Moisture Meter” (seriously) so I could give them the precise right amount of water.

I was attempting to do things like repotting and pruning and my husband was misting his succulents (again, seriously).

Like, we were committed.

Then life got a little crazy.

We had a baby.
I started a business.
We had another baby.
My husband started a business.

And I started to ignore that reminder.
And so my plants started dying.
And I started to feel like shit.

One night in 2023, I was sitting on the couch staring at my dying plants.

And I was so FRUSTRATED.

I remember thinking, I’m looking at the plants. I see they are dying. I am not doing *anything* important right now. So why tf am I not getting up and watering them?!

So, in a classic millennial move, I snapped a pic and shared it to my Stories:
I don’t think anyone replied. But that was OK. I found a little space for self-compassion and I wanted the people on the other side of the screen to feel a little less alone if their plants were (metaphorically or literally) dying too.

So here’s where it gets interesting.

About a year later, I’m talking to a friend in the DMs when she says:

You know when you posted forever ago about how your plants were dying and you couldn’t muster up the energy or motivation to water them? I think about that ALL THE TIME.

And that’s when it hit me.

We don’t always see the impact of our content or our messaging or our marketing right away.

And sometimes?

We NEVER see it.

(Not directly at least.)

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t working.

All I wanted to do with that post was make other people feel less alone.

And it worked. Even though I had no idea.

If you post something on Instagram and it “flops,” that doesn’t mean that it didn’t start a ripple effect that could result in a new conversation or a new collaboration or a new client.

If you send an email and nobody clicks and only 14% open it and 10 people unsubscribe, that doesn’t mean that it didn’t mean the WORLD to a handful (or even all) of the people who read it and stayed.

We’ve been trained to consume content and move on.
Watch a reel, keep swiping.
Skim an email, press delete.

So plz remember: It doesn’t always mean something if it seems, at first glance, your content flopped.

Sometimes, that lil "flop" is doing its own magic in the background.

Oh–and I can’t wrap up this email without saying this (in all caps, apologies in advance):

IT’S OKAY IF YOUR PLANTS ARE DYING.
IT’S OKAY IF YOU IGNORE ANY AND ALL OPPORTUNITIES TO WATER THEM.
YOU ARE DOING ENOUGH.

Phew.

I feel like I was leading up to that for 4037 characters and I finally got it out. Feels good.

AND NOW, your homework:

📝 001: Go water your plants

Just kidding. Kinda. 😉

But really, if you ARE struggling with keeping up with ~adulting~ on top of all of your other responsibilities or just because of your current life circumstances, might I suggest the perfect book for you?

Go read “How to Keep House While Drowning” by KC Davis. She’ll tell you all about how watering your plants (or doing the laundry or the dishes or the vacuuming) is all morally neutral and you are a GOOD PERSON even if your home is a mess.

That book changed my life.

(Oh, and if you wanna see the dying plants that inspired today's email, click here to see yesterday's post on IG).

📝 002: Give yourself permission to ignore the “nice to-dos” on your task list.

Look, you are freaking amazing.

But you’re not a superhuman.

It’s OK to let things go - for now or forever.

If there’s a task on your to-do list that truly isn’t a MUST do, and you are in a season where you simply don’t have the capacity to do more than the essentials…

It’s okay to let it go.

Really.

📝 003: Last one. Let’s get out there and build some community on these ol' interwebs, yeah?

Serious question: What if we didn’t just consume content and move on?

What if, instead, we took a moment to engage with said content or tell the creator how much that message meant to us?

Right away, a year later - it doesn’t matter.

People love hearing that their work and words have meant something to someone else.

I know I could be better at this too. So, what do ya say we work on this together?

(And no, this is NOT a ploy to get you to respond to this email but like if you wanna, I’d obviously love it?!)

But for real… This week, when something really resonates with you, don’t scroll on by. Take a minute to say something.

And I will too. 💛

Now, if you want help crafting some emails that hit your people in all the right feels, tap reply and let’s chat. I’d love to help you get your message out into the world.

Either way, see ya next week First name / friend.

Hugs from one messy human in the messy middle to another,
