Stop Being Scared to Fail

Start Small and Dream Big
Picture this…you have a brilliant idea for a business that could change the lives of you and your family. You can see the potential, the success, and the impact you could make on society. But as soon as you start to think about all the steps involved – creating a business plan, securing funding, marketing, and a million other things – it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. The fear of failure creeps in, and suddenly, your dream seems impossible.

But what if you took a different approach?

What if, instead of focusing on the entire journey from beginning to end, you just focused on the very first step. Maybe it’s researching your target market, or just writing the first page of your business plan. Whatever the first step is, my point is that each small action builds momentum, and before you know it, you’re making progress.

It’s why I always stress racking up those small wins. In time, they turn into huge successes.

That being said, I haven’t acknowledged the elephant in the room yet.

I’m referring to whatever that thing is that’s holding you back from starting. It doesn’t have to be a new business. It could be dropping weight, training for a half-marathon, or going back for that college degree that is only a few credits away. Whatever the goal is, we all have to deal with the fear of failure and low self-esteem, but I’ll touch more on that in a minute.

If you’re feeling like you’re just not ready yet, it’s alright, the truth is that no one ever feels completely ready. I can’t tell you how many times I competed in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments with nagging injuries and a million thoughts weighing on my mind, but I stepped on the mat anyway.

Why? Because the universe rewards action, not hesitation.

But I also understand that starting a big project or task can be daunting. The fear of the unknown, the potential for failure, and the sheer scale of the task can make ambitious dreams seem impossible.

So, it got me thinking, what causes the fear of starting, and how can we overcome it?

strategies to overcome fears

Fear of starting often comes from a few sources: the fear of failure, and low self-esteem. These fears can be absolutely paralyzing and even prevent us from taking the first step. But there are strategies to overcome these fears:

  1. Break It Down: One effective way to take on a big project is to break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. This approach makes the overall project less intimidating and gives you that feeling of progress as you complete each task. Focusing on one step at a time allows you to build that momentum you need to keep going.
  2. Set Clear Goals: Setting clear and achievable goals gives you the direction you need. You also need to know exactly what success looks like, so that each step gets you to exactly that point. This level of clarity helps reduce anxiety and provides you with a roadmap.
  3. Embrace Failure: The fear of failure is a significant barrier for a lot of people. However, viewing failure as a learning opportunity rather than a setback can change your perspective. Each failure teaches you something valuable and brings you closer to success.
I made mistakes when I started my first business. And yes, it was frustrating and sometimes I had to repeat steps if I didn’t do it right the first time, but that is exactly what helped me succeed. I’m sure most of you have heard the old Michael Jordan quote about how failure is what helped him to become successful. It totally applies to what I’m talking about now.
what can we do to overcome the fear of failure?
The fear of failure can make you doubt your abilities and hesitate to take action. Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wonder if I could do that.” But because you’re not certain if you really can, that fear of failure will cause us to not even try. Here are a few things that worked for me:

  1. Focus on Small Wins: I’ll be preaching this until I can no longer talk. The reason is that each small success builds your confidence and reduces the fear of failure. These little victories should be celebrated and will motivate you to keep going.
  2. Practice Self-Compassion: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Everyone one of us is our own worst critic. Some of us don’t even accept compliments well. What I’m advocating for is to acknowledge your efforts and progress, even if they seem small. The other key is positive self-talk, beating down your self-esteem with your own negative thoughts and doubts is a quick way to go nowhere.
  3. Take Action: The best way to overcome fear is to take action. I’ll type that again because I want it to stick in your mind. The best way to overcome fear is to take action. Those small steps eventually turn into bigger accomplishments. So, remember, each action you take not only builds momentum, but reduces fear too.

Remember, every great achievement starts with a single step. By breaking down your goals, setting clear objectives, and embracing failure as a learning opportunity, you can overcome both the fear of starting and the fear of failure.

What I want all of you to take away from this is that it’s normal to feel fear when it comes to doing something big. These feelings are more common than you think. Even the most successful people are scared to fail, but they don’t let that stop them and that is exactly why they made it.

I’ve said it before, the universe rewards action, so when I say close your eyes and jump, I want you to take that first step without worrying about the outcome.
