BIG SIT SPECS
STISSING HOUSE

  • History: It was built in 1782 to serve as a watering hole for the country town of Pine Plains, New York.  The building had a tavern, beds for travelers, and America’s first domed ballroom (it's sick). Pine Plains was the crossroads of two historic routes and rail lines. Its Main Street was buzzing with hundreds of travelers each day who stopped by Stissing House to eat, drink and dance.

  • Why: It's Historic, refined, but approachable. Quintessential upstate experience. Food is incredible here but there was a feeling of being transported. To a different time. A place that been resuscitated but not ruined. You can feel the history when you walk in. The sitting area, fireplace, and peanuts that welcome you as you await your table. The massive bar/open kitchen/main dining area may go down as my "most nostalgic dining room". The hallway is adorned with homework from students who went to school at the Stissing House in the 18th century.

  • Scene: elevated historic tavern, refined but in a relaxed "Upstatey" way, cozy…."rustic refined."
  • Design: Wide plank pine floors. Brick floors. Shiplap. Shaker-inspired touches, candle sticks,  “Our design goal was to highlight the incredible character and bones of the space by paring back and warming up,” de Boer explains. But at its core, “this isn’t a ‘new’ restaurant, just new caretakers.”
  • Longevity of Sit: 3-4 hours. A destination sit. A historical sit.
  • What you'll hear: Taj Mahal
  • What could happen next?: Not much. A long drive soaking up the scenery is my recommendation. Or drive 30-40 minutes to neighboring towns and options open up. Hit Saugerties, Rhinebeck, Woodstock, and/or Kingston for more fun.
