Studio Update - August 2024 |
Summer can be a joyful time in Minnesota, except when itās not. Though August is typically a month of heat, humidity, and bugs we still make a point to enjoy the last few weeks of warmer weather. And we are keenly aware that the days are growing shorter. Like the Sunday Scaries, it can be a bit depressing. My āDark Summerā theme started in 2022 with a cohort of talented Artists who dazzled us with their darksome creations. It honored the melancholy feelings we arenāt supposed to haveā¦especially in the summer! I regret not making the time to coordinate a physical event this year, but maybe it will be back in 2025. š¤ |

Last month I was fortunate to be able to attend a virtual workshop by Atlas Obscura Experiences called āAll the Small Things: Crafting a Miniature Abandoned Room.ā We learned the basic techniques of miniature-making while crafting a tiny, abandoned room of our own. This was way too fun! I made a new workshop space for Elphaba and sheās busy making herself at home, preparing for the upcoming āpumpkin spiceā season. š |

inspiration everywhere To escape the heat and humidity, we find this monthās inspiration underground. |
First letās cool off about 20 feet under water at the Sunken Cemetery in the Philippines. Back in the 1870s, a volcano caused the cemetery (and the entire town) to sink beneath the sea. To check out this place of reverence and reflection, you can view the monument from land or snorkel out to see the underground tombstones (and giant clams). |
In a network of underground streets in Edinburgh, Scotland youāll find King Maryās Close. A close is a Scottish term used to describe narrow passageways between buildings. This particular close is said to be haunted, which is not surprising when you experience this dark and incredibly eerie room filled with childrenās dolls. |
Tired? You can now get the āDeepest Sleep in the Worldā in this underground hotel in north Wales. If your melatonin sleep supplements arenāt doing the trick, check out the Deep Sleep website for room availability here. |
Last month I said I would find a way for you to see my Wicked Plant collection without having to drive to Omaha, Nebraska. (Though you would enjoy the city as Omaha does have a lot to offer.) Much like the curious botanist who helped inspire the collection, I am in the process of taking photos and inventory of each piece. You can check out my progress on the website here. šæ |
