The Great Northern Battle
The annual Great Northern Battle, one of the most anticipated events in our golfing calendar, was hosted this year at the picturesque Northern Wairoa Golf Club. The competition between Northland and North Harbour is always fierce, and this year was no exception, with both teams bringing their A-game.

The course at Northern Wairoa was in pristine condition, offering both challenges and opportunities for players. The strategic layout, coupled with the club’s beautiful scenery, provided the perfect backdrop for a day of intense competition and camaraderie.

As the matches unfolded, it became clear that Northland was determined to claim victory. Every shot mattered, and the players gave it their all displaying remarkable skill and sportsmanship.

In the end, Northland emerged victorious, clinching the overall points and securing bragging rights until next year’s rematch. The teams were equally split with the Northland Junior Boys and Senior Men winning their respective trophies, and the Senior Women and Men’s masters (on a count-back) trophies were won by North Harbour. The final scores reflected the close competition, but it was Northland's consistent performance across all matches that made the difference.

Congratulations to the Northland team for their first win in 12 years!

A big thank you to the Northern Wairoa Golf Club for hosting such a memorable event, and to all the players and supporters who made the day special. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year for another thrilling instalment of the Great Northern Battle.

Golf in 2024 Workshop
Fresh updates on golf, club branding and marketing, and club sustainability were all topics for discussion at recent workshops held at the Waitangi Golf Club and Sport Northland.

Over the two evenings, there was an all time high of 20 participants from 12 different clubs which validates the desire for learning in the industry. The participants were immersed in robust discussions with many learnings coming from another successful workshop series.

A huge thank you for Stephen Gee who came up from Auckland to support North Golf in the facilitation of these workshops!

Congratulations
lydia ko
Congratulations to Lydia Ko for becoming the youngest ever inductee into the LPGA Hall of Fame following her gold medal victory at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. In a remarkable achievement, Lydia is the sole golfer in recent history to secure silver, bronze, and gold medals across three distinct Olympic Games. And now … the AIG Women’s Open at St Andrew's, Old Course.

calendar of events 2025
All General Managers were sent the form to collect club information at the beginning of August to assist the planning of the 2025 Calendar of Events. This is due back on the 27th August and one form from each club is the ideal.
There were a couple of hiccups with the form, which is great feedback and will be addressed in the 2026 collection survey. For those with additional information, there is provision for you to let us know information via the ‘Other’ box on page 2. For example, that your coring dates are only provisional as there was no option for you to advise that your club does not do coring.
If you have any issues please contact Joanne at admin@northgolf.nz for quick resolution.
Thanks to those clubs that have provided their details and if you haven't, please send your information at the earliest.

Make the rules work for you … provisional ball
  1. You can hit a ball as a provisional, if you feel that the original is not in a good place, and ask other players (even your opponent) not to look for the original
  2. Other players nevertheless may still conduct a search for that ball, so long as it does not unreasonably delay play
  3. A player may make numerous strokes at the provisional without it becoming the ball in play until ....
  4. another stroke has been made at the provisional from a spot nearer the hole than where the original was estimated to be, the provisional only then becomes the ball in play
  5. Once the provisional becomes the ball in play (either after more than three minutes has been spent looking for the original, or it has been played from the closer spot), it does not matter if the ball is then found (even within the search time limit).
