Utility is the Foundation of Design

The foundation of design is fun SWAG… and utility. When it comes down to it, design is all about tackling problems. Even the most innovative products stem from an ongoing, iterative process. Staying user-centric and iterative in real world applications will help ground and guide innovative ideas.

Use Smart Design Systems

Good design systems prevent overcrowding—They add personality, guide design decisions, and enhance a brand’s identity. Designers Cam Worboys (Cash App) and Nate Baldwin (Adobe) spoke about “The Broken Promises of Design Systems” and “The Value of Opinions in Design Systems”. It's all about striking a balance between consistency, quality, and creative freedom.

Accessibility is Non-Negotiable

Accessibility is not just a legal requirement; it's a fundamental aspect of good design. Tregg Frank (Figma) spoke about "Pitching Accessibility Like a Pro" and the critical role accessibility plays in expanding market reach, protecting against potential liabilities, and to ensure long-term cost savings. But beyond these practical benefits, it's simply the right thing to do, fostering inclusivity and making products usable for everyone. Designing for accessibility is designing for everyone.

Heart Isn't Frivolous

One of the most inspiring themes at Config revolved around infusing your excitement and unique perspective into design. Speakers Karla Mickens Cole and Nashilu Mouen Makoua (The Browser Company), Emily Sneddon (COLLINS), and Jenny Arden (Zillow) reminded us that design is not just about functionality and aesthetics; it's also about passion and authenticity. All these things add an intangible quality that users can feel, even if they don't know the backstory.
