August at Thrive Outside! Navigating Transitions and Back-To-School Changes
Hi First name

I'm so glad you're part of our small but growing community of families who love the great outdoors! August can bring with it some fears and anxieties for both kids and their caregivers around returning to school schedules.

Here are some tips from our clinicians to help give you a boost of confidence!

Dr. Diana Honorat, OTD, RYT-500
Preparing your child for back-to-school is an intentional process. Reflect on what supports your child needs--whether it's on transitions between tasks, sensory needs, or consistent routines, and focus on making sure those supports are in place through teachers, therapists, and other systems you're involved with. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
Diana Fitts, OTR/L
One of my favorite back-to-school tips is to use the last few weeks of summer to practice and have fun with the elements of the school routine that may be challenging or nerve wracking. Do a fashion show with the first day of school outfit to make sure your child feels comfortable in it. Have a picnic with the same food they’ll have packed for lunch on the first day of school. Play games they may encounter with other kids on the playground. Slowly start adjusting bed and wake-up times to reflect the school schedule. Setup and create fun decorations for your child’s desk or homework space. Fun activities like these can ease the transition and make the first day of school feel less overwhelming.
