When I share an organizing project online, people often ask if it stays that way. My answer is always, "Yes, if you maintain it." To be clear, my goal is not for my clients' spaces to stay Instagram-worthy. I want to help them create organized, intentional spaces that are easy to reset and find things in, and that foster a deep sense of peace and well-being in their lives. So, how do you maintain it?

Consistent decluttering is my top tip for staying organized.

Decluttering is more than just a trend; it's a valuable practice that enhances quality of life. In our fast-paced world, it's easy for our homes (vehicles and workspaces) to become filled with unused items. While it can be a chore, having a strong reason to do so can motivate you. If you need inspiration, here are five benefits of decluttering.

  1. Mental Clarity: A clutter-free space can reduce stress and anxiety and improve focus. Clutter can be distracting and overwhelming, making concentrating and thinking harder.
  2. Productivity: An organized environment allows you to find things quickly and work more efficiently. You spend less time searching for items and more time completing tasks.
  3. Health and Safety: Clutter can accumulate dust and allergens, affecting air quality and potentially leading to health issues. Additionally, excessive clutter can pose tripping hazards and increase the risk of accidents.
  4. Emotional Well-being: Letting go of unnecessary items can be emotionally liberating. It helps create a sense of order and control, leading to a more peaceful and satisfying living space.
  5. Financial Benefits: Decluttering helps us recognize what we have, preventing unnecessary purchases of items we already own. Selling or donating unused items can also provide extra income or tax deductions.
Decluttering is an ongoing process that demands lasting behavioral changes. Regularly setting aside some time—just 15 minutes is a win!
