Hi First name / friend!

I know you might cringe when you see that the newsletter is political, but while society has made abortion a political issue, it isn’t a political issue. It is a spiritual issue, and it can help us figure out how to see the current election season through a biblical worldview.

It might be important for you to know that I am an abolitionist. I believe that all abortion is wrong. I believe the baby should never face the death penalty for the sins of the parents, whether that be rape, abuse, or simply poor decision making. And I believe the women seeking abortions should be held accountable. The last statistic I heard on this was that 95% of abortions are performed on healthy women with healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. We can play the exception game all day long, but the exceptions should not dictate the rules.

While this could go without saying, I’ll say it anyway: God forgives. No matter the sin, it is not too big for God to forgive and restore. This is no different for the woman who has had an abortion.

I know that none of the candidates currently on the ballot are pro-life the way we would like them to be. They may call themselves pro-life, but they all leave at least a little wiggle room for the murder of innocent babies in the womb. This makes it easy to wash our hands of this election and decide that we are just not going to vote for any of them.

My friend, if that is you, let me gently encourage you to change your mind.

When it comes to abortion, I’m proudly a one-issue voter. If there were two candidates who believed in abolition of abortion, then I might take a closer look at other issues, but as long as there is no candidate solidly in the camp of abolition, I will happily label myself!

So how can I be encouraged by the options if I claim to be a one-issue voter and there are no candidates in my corner? By choosing the BEST option of the three. So let’s take a look:

Let’s begin with RFK (Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.). While he has been a bit wishy-washy on the subject of abortion, first claiming that he believes in abortion through birth and later backpedaling to a more “moderate” position, he really is no better on this issue than the other candidates. And he may have some very interesting and valid ideas about the other issues that will be determined in the election, but he can’t win.

The last numbers I saw had RFK polling at about 3%. Some who make up that percentage are leaving the Republican party to vote for him, and some the Democrat party. But ultimately, a vote for RFK is not a winning vote. It is unfortunate that we really only have two choices, but it is our reality. So let’s take RFK off the table.

The Harris/Walz ticket is proudly pro-abortion. Notice I didn’t say pro-choice because they are 100% in favor of abortion through birth. Harris even voted against a bill that would require doctors to provide life-saving care for a baby born alive after a failed abortion.

Even more concerning for me is that they have repeatedly expressed the desire to codify Roe v. Wade. That means they want to make it a constitutional right for a woman to seek an abortion. They want to change the Constitution of the United States to say that every woman has the RIGHT to kill her preborn baby while it is in the womb, a place that is supposed to be safe and protected. No judge in the land, no matter what the state laws are, would be able to penalize anyone involved in an abortion—not the mother, not the father, not the “doctors.”

This should alarm us—not because it would be impossible to come back from it, we know nothing is impossible with God, but because it would be very difficult, would take a very long time, and would cost thousands, if not millions, of innocent infant lives in the process. And lest you think this wouldn’t happen, the supreme court would stop it, and the American people wouldn’t stand for it, it doesn’t take much research to find that some states are already clamoring for this and Harris’s threat to “pack the court,” filling the supreme court with her Democrat-leaning choices, could become a reality.

The Trump/Vance ticket is not pro-life, either. Both men have stated that there is a window during pregnancy when they think an abortion is acceptable, and this is not okay. The Bible and science are clear that life begins at conception, so even some forms of birth control and “the morning after” pill are unacceptable.

However, throughout his political career, Trump has moved on this issue in the right direction, even becoming the first president to attend a March for Life. He has demonstrated that he is open to changing his position on this issue, and I believe there is hope in that.

Maybe more important, though, is the fact that both he and Vance want the power of decision to stay with the states. They do not want the federal government to interfere with how individual states proceed on this issue. This alone will save so many innocent lives! And it makes the fight easier as we try to move the needle toward a country that won’t stand for baby killing.

So if you have decided to sit this election out, let me simply respond this way: Choosing not to vote for the BEST option is a vote for the WORST option.

This includes throwing your vote to RFK who cannot win, voting for every elected position except president, or staying home and refusing to participate all together.

Not voting is still voting; it is simply voting for the worst possible outcome.

I recently finished reading the book Raised to Stay by Natalie Runion, and I definitely found it wanting. It is a solid “No” for me.

Let me start by giving you some context about the book. The audience for this book is Christians who have experienced “church hurt” but have not allowed that to come between them and the Church.

I purchased the book because I heard a podcast interview of Runion that intrigued me. Yes, she calls herself a pastor and presented some progressive ideas in the episode, but I like to read books that I know will challenge my positions. I am conservative and complementarian in my views of the roles of women in the church.

The truth is none of that was a turn off in this book. There are deeper issues.

Runion is a talented writer; she definitely knows how to turn a phrase, but in doing so, she sacrifices substance. The book is full of pithy sayings and clever wording, but it is wrapped up tight in a big bow of emotionalism. You may catch yourself nodding as you relate to one of the many stories she tells in the book, only to turn the page and forget why you were nodding. And I’ll admit to cringing a bit when I read the sentences “He gets us,” and “This is how I fight my battles.”

This book is a great example of MEology. She literally writes herself into the narrative of Scripture, often completely missing the point of the story she is co-opting. She presents herself as a Paul, a Timothy, and a David as if these men are meant to represent us in our struggles. Even the very first chapter of the book left me wondering if she truly understands Jesus because the picture she paints of Him does not align with the Jesus of Scripture.

Not everything in the book is bad. I especially appreciated the way she handled accountability, making a clear distinction between “church hurt” and simply being embarrassed as a result of being called out for an error. She makes it clear that ministry is not all sunshine and rainbows, and sometimes it gets messy.

But the good does not outweigh the problematic in my opinion.

Because this book demonstrates clearly the incorrect reading of Scripture as a “self-help” book that will give me nuggets of wisdom to explain my life instead of reading it to get to know God and His character, I cannot recommend it.
