How two musicians became builders |
|
👋🏼 Hi, Shandra here, I hope you're having a nice start to your week so far. Did I tell you how Nathan and I became home remodelers? It's honestly a sweet story about two musicians from two different states who fell head-over-heels for each other and accidentally landed in the building industry on purpose. |

I grew up in a family and community of home builders and had long fallen in love with the industry. It had been a childhood dream of mine to someday work in home construction. However, I fell in love with music in fifth grade and filled my days with it all through high school. I tried out for everything I could, immersed myself in musicals, and worked hard to be as well-trained as possible. Nathan grew up on a hog farm and knew how to fix machinery and buildings by elementary age. He, too, fell in love with music and pursued singing, musicals, and a traveling music group, even going to college on a music scholarship. At college, Nathan became our chorale president and chapel worship leader, and we were smitten. We didn't want to be apart during summer break, so Nathan took a job building decks while I waited tables so we could be in the same state. We got married, and Nathan kept the deck job through college. |

After graduation, building became Nathan's career while we worked in music on the side, waiting for a full-time position to become available. He began honing his skills and moving through promotions, which landed him the position of building gorgeous staircases on a finish crew that built multi-million dollar homes. Eventually, a full-time position opened up, and we left the construction world behind. Or so we thought. To our surprise, we quickly realized that we didn't love music as a career and wanted to return to building. |
|
So, we returned to construction, began our own company, became a licensed general contractor, and never looked back. We apply the same effort to building as we gave to the arduous demands of a decade of practice rooms, making sure each note of the remodeled space has been tuned. It's been a while since I've mentioned how we happily, accidentally on purpose landed in building and it feels good to reminisce. So, that's how two musicians became builders! |
