I have always been curious about why people do what they do. When I was 10, I did a study on the growth of insane asylums since we lived across the street from the Brooklyn state mental institution. It made me wonder why people were there and what made them act the way they did. I feel the same curiosity about synthetics and the petrochemical industry inserting petroleum by-products into so many everyday products. I decided to stop putting money into the hands of manufacturers who are poisoning us, our pets and the planet.
A physician who had just finished reading a book on the olfactory system called me in to discuss essential oils. We had a lively conversation about the importance of assessing the entire environment and eliminating synthetic fragrances. We also discussed the false marketing claims prevalent today.
I love research and continue to assess everything that comes into our home. It turns out it's easier than I thought—just look for words like "certified organic," "fair trade," and other labels that signify oversight from soil to market.
When I joined Young Living to purchase their essential oils, I decided to save enough money to visit their farms. They were the first to allow anyone to visit, and I think they still are the only ones who allow everyone to visit worldwide. Their motto is from Seed To Seal and fortunately they live up to it.
Whether you believe in the benefits or not, the most important thing is to rid yourself of all synthetic fragrances because they go up through the nose. And what's up above that?
Exercise for Assessing Your Environment and Personal Care for Well-being
1. Create a Clean Environment
- Indoor Air Quality: Ensure good ventilation in your home. Open windows regularly to let fresh air in and consider using air purifiers with HEPA filters.
- Natural Cleaners: Replace chemical cleaners with natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Check for non-toxic, pet-safe options. I use two products for our entire home. *Thieves Household Cleaner and Thieves Kitchen & Bath Scrub.
2. Evaluate Personal Care Products:
- Read Labels: Look for products labeled "certified organic," "fair trade," or "non-toxic." Avoid items with synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, and other harmful chemicals.
- Simplify Ingredients: Choose products with fewer, recognizable ingredients. The simpler, the better.
3. Assess Pet Care Products:
- Safe Grooming Products: Use pet shampoos and grooming products that are free from synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals.
- Healthy Diet: Feed your pets high-quality, natural food free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
- Minimalist Approach: Limit the number of products you bring into your home. Focus on quality over quantity, choosing items that are essential and beneficial.
- DIY Solutions: Consider making your own cleaning and personal care products using simple, natural ingredients.
By taking these steps, you can create a healthier, safer environment for both yourself and your companion animals. Remember, small changes can lead to significant improvements in well-being.
