A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
I had a terrible dream last night (true story).
In my dream, I was in a plant store, but the plants on the shelves were my own. The store owner said they were all infected with deadly pests and needed to be destroyed. He proceeded to chop them down one by one. I was in tears watching it happen.
Do you ever wonder why we dream certain things? I think I dreamed this because I spent yesterday afternoon rearranging several of my plants. |

Speaking of pests, have you read this article about how to resist pests as a new proofreader or editor? It features the mealybugs I've been dealing with on my Hoya pubicalyx. 😑 |

A Hummingbird Lesson: The Importance of Pausing |
|
Remember when I introduced you to the ruby-throated hummingbird couple that comes to the feeder outside my office window? I've decided to call the female Ruby (top right photo) and the male Rupert (bottom right photo).
I felt bad that they have to keep beating their wings, even while eating. I mean, everyone deserves a break sometimes, right? So my husband bought them a hummingbird swing. Honestly, I didn't think they would ever use it. But look what I saw this week! |
|
Just like Ruby and Rupert enjoy a well-deserved break on their swing, we need to take time to rest and recharge after lengthy periods of focused proofreading, editing, or writing work.
As Labor Day approaches for those who live in the States, let's remember the importance of little pauses in our day. Whether it's a quick stretch, a moment of fresh air, or simply stepping away from the screen, these breaks help us return to our work with fresh eyes and renewed energy. |

Favorite LinkedIn Posts This Week: |

Here are three posts I enjoyed reading on LinkedIn this week (shared with permission): - What's on your dopamine menu? You've probably heard of dopamine—the brain chemical that helps control feelings of pleasure, motivation, and reward. But have you thought about creating a “dopamine menu” for yourself when you need a break? I also loved this article with tips for organizing dopamine breaks into categories you'd find on a menu: starters, main dishes, sides, desserts, and specials. 🍴
- 9 mindset shifts to embrace: I especially liked number 2 on Eric's list: “Lose the clutter.” And wait until you see the fabulous illustrations by Ash Lamb that go along with this post. Shifting “mind full” to “mindful” is my favorite. 🧠
- Tips for disconnecting on your days off: Whether you take days off on the weekend or in the middle of the week, these tips from Ciera are great! I liked her idea to use an app blocker. I need to try that! 💡
By the way, if you're on LinkedIn, I'd love to connect! |

To “pore over” something means to examine or study it with great attention to detail. It's often used when someone is carefully reading a document, book, or other material, spending a lot of time to understand or analyze it.💡 Catch of the Week screenshots come from my transcript proofreading. I can't change what a person said, but I can make sure words are spelled correctly and punctuation marks are in the right spots. If you're interested in learning more about transcript proofreading, I wrote an article about it here. |
