Hi House Church Leaders!

As we go through Revelation as a church, we will be sending out weekly sermon summaries and discussion questions to help your House Churches facilitate deeper study.

Christ in Crisis
John’s revelation is not merely a letter but a divine unveiling, inviting believers to see beyond the visible, understanding that God is at work behind the scenes despite the turmoil of the present moment. The vivid imagery used in Revelation is meant to captivate the heart and reshape the imagination, giving believers a divine perspective on their struggles. John, exiled for his faith, receives a profound vision of the risen and glorified Christ, a vision that reveals Jesus not as distant but as intimately present with His people, especially during times of crisis. This vision of Jesus emphasizes His dual role as High Priest and King, embodying wisdom, authority, and eternal power, and is intended to encourage and sustain the church amid persecution.
Discussion Questions
1. How does the imagery in Revelation 1, particularly the vision of Jesus among the lampstands, challenge or reshape your understanding of Christ's presence in the church today?
  •  In what ways does this vision help you to see beyond your immediate circumstances?
2. John received this vision while "in the Spirit" on the Lord's Day, even in the midst of exile and suffering. How does this example influence the way you approach worship, especially in difficult seasons?
  • What practices can help you remain spiritually engaged during times of crisis?
3. The sermon emphasizes that Revelation is not meant to be decoded, but absorbed to reshape our imagination. How can adopting this perspective change the way you read and apply the book of Revelation to your life?

4. Reflect on the story of Polycarp, who was sustained by his vision of Jesus even unto death. How can having a clear vision of the glorified Christ empower you to face your own fears and challenges?
Communal Practice: Worship in Crisis
Share: As a group, name the hurting points in the House Church. Make a list, and commit to intercede for one another throughout the week.
Respond: Gather around in response to the prayers of the group to worship together, focusing on seeking God's presence and being "in the Spirit," as John was.
         •  Include singing, prayer, and reading scripture that
            emphasizes God's sovereignty and presence.

Daily Discipleship: Worship & Pray
Dedicate time each day for personal worship, intentionally setting aside distractions to focus on being "in the Spirit." This might include listening to worship music, spending time in prayer, or meditating on scripture that reveals the character of Jesus.
          • Pray through the list of prayer requests in House Churches.
Especially if you are not in crisis. Intercede for those who you
            know are struggling.
