Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Transmissions from Seattle!
 
I appreciate the nuances of this job. Some days the work involves navigating a sea of concert goers in pursuit of the thing you don’t know you’re looking for until you see it, other days it’s waking up at 3 a.m. for a 6 a.m. call time across the state. This summer, I spent lots of time eating fruit over the steering wheel between shoots all over the west coast for The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, NYT, Bloomberg and more.
 
I view my work as an ongoing love letter to this beautiful, strange, painful, surprising, confusing and undeniably fantastical world we live in. Photography can at times feel like a way to begin to make sense of it all, but it usually leaves more questions in its wake.
 
I accept mystery.

For The New York Times: I was thrilled to get the call to photograph Chappell Roan at Capitol Hill Block Party. The editors even included a photo in their outtakes column, Inside Culture, and let me talk about magic in an international newspaper.

For The Margin: Environmental stories will always be near and dear to my heart. I worked on two such stories this summer. For Ottavia Spaggiari’s story on climate change’s impact on tribal nations fight for federal recognition, I travelled to Oregon to attend a salmon ceremony and photograph members of the community.

For Rico Moore’s investigation on the myriad ways Seattle City Light’s control of the Skagit River has impacted the Upper Skagit Tribe’s treaty rights, I rose at dawn to photograph many of the impacted regions along Highway 20 mentioned in the story.

For WSJ: I hightailed it to Leavenworth to spend the day with Vanessa Cameron and her son, Jack for a story on how women’s role(s) in the workplace has evolved.

For Afar: I had a really fun collaboration with the pie queen, Lauren Ko, aka @lokokitchen for Afar Magazine’s summer features opener. Look at this beaut!

For Seattle Met: In June, I paid a visit to Seattle’s favorite radio station, KEXP, to photograph DJ Evie Stokes, who recently replaced DJ Kevin Cole’s drive time slot.

For The Washington Post: I photographed Lisa Osadchuk for a story on medical transparency, highlighting how online health portals affect patients’ understanding of their conditions— for better and for worse.

For Fortune: I flew to San Francisco for a breezy thirty minutes with Microsoft Executive VP of Business Development Chris Young for Fortune’s July issue.

For Businessweek: Bloomberg antitrust reporter Leah Nylen and I traveled across two states to cover the impact of the potential Albertson’s and Kroger merger on local communities. To me, this story reinforces the real world consequences that corporations can have on people’s lives… and the importance of *tap tap is this thing on* jOuRnaLisM.

In August, I bid farewell to my first ever summer intern, Linda Hsiung, who assisted on many of these shoots. It was so great, I’ve decided to carve out space for future interns.
