This week's narrator interview: LANCE GREENFIELD |
SFN: What inspired you to record audiobooks? |
LG: I was told I had a nice voice and that I ought to do something with it. I heard about a studio in Brooklyn called Brick Shop Audio and have been working with them for nearly 10 years! I've also been an avid listener for most of my life; Lemony Snicket's Series Of Unfortunate Events read by Tim Curry was my favorite! |
SFN: How long are your recording days? |
LG: Usually around 6-7 hours. I take a lot of breaks, after each chapter, mostly. |
SFN: Do you recall a specific book you connected with viscerally as a young reader or as an adult? |
LG: I was in 2nd grade, and there was a cassette tape of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark read by the late great George S. Irving. Those scared the crap out of me, but I loved memorizing them and reciting them for my classmates. |
SFN: Could you please tell us how you prepare to voice a character that is written with a dialect or accent that is new to you? |
LG: If it's an accent I'm unfamiliar with, I'll hop onto YouTube and find some samples of it. Then I'll practice it myself until I'm comfortable with it. I'll run it by the author to ultimately get approval and go from there! |
SFN: What's the biggest challenge you face as an audiobook narrator? |
LG: Deadlines can creep up on you, and some months are busier than others. It can be difficult to keep up with at times, and that's when you need to "go into overtime" and just plow through into the night. |
SFN: If you could spend either a week in the past or a week in the future, where and when would you go? |
LG: I'd want to spend a week in the 80's as that seems to be everyone's favorite decade. I'd love to see people just being present with each other, no phones, no BS. |
