Unless it's concrete or a wooden plank, I've never had problem sleeping.
I can even sleep on the cheapest plane seat.
(Except if the turbulence is enough to make me believe I'm being called to My Maker. But that's another story…)
Recently, my issue has been falling asleep at a decent hour.
Admittedly, I'm naturally a late bird. That's because I've always written my novels at night, when the house is quiet. Most nights I'm up until 2 or 3am; and, at the most, I sleep seven hours. My East Coast pals laugh because I may email them when they're getting up, and they wonder why I haven't yet gone to sleep.
Should you have also trouble sleeping, or not getting enough sleep, here's what I'd suggest:
First, make your room pitch black. Since Martin is already asleep when I go to bed, I carry tiny flashlight, so that I don't disturb him by turning on a light.
Next, don't eat to late, and minimize your alcohol intake. A full belly isn't easy to sleep on. And going to bed tipsy may make you toss, turn, and rouse you for a bathroom break. (Which is better than the alternative.)
And finally, think happy thoughts. I've trained myself not to mull on the fact I've fallen behind on my writing or some silly mistake I may have made. Instead, I visualize sitting on a sandy beach, or in a sunny park.
I also say out loud the best thing that happened that day.
And, yes, I count my blessings: for health, happiness, and those I love and who love me.
Pleasant dreams!
