Dear Jewelweed friends,

In these turbulent times, our anxiety and stress rise as we are caught in the fire of division, uncertainty, and extremes. Every transformative moment is an opportunity to ask ourselves pertinent questions, review our way of living, and find where we are out of balance.

It is challenging when the source of unbalance and turbulence comes from a collective, seemingly out-of-control place. But we do have control over our individual choices.
It is the small choices and practices we make every day that create the overall quality of our lives. Below are our favorites; they are easy to do and only require your attention and presence.

Our mission at Jewelweed has always been to help people find this balance through nature, community, and wellness. When we look at our namesake, the jewelweed plant, we see that, when placed underwater, its leaves form air bubbles that look like jewels. This is a metaphor we can apply to ourselves right now:

Where do we find air when we feel like we are underwater?

What jewels can we create from this challenging season?

Finding Balance in Turbulent Times

Unplug
-
We are all aware that our time online, scrolling and receiving a lot of random information (from silly pets to political memes, home decor  and trendy outfits) is more than our nervous system is designed to process. Planning one day (or more) in your week to avoid social media and the news will make you feel much less overwhelmed.

Connect With Others
-
The more we stay alone when overwhelmed, angry, or scared, the more these feelings have room because there is nothing else to buffer and recalibrate our experience.
The medicine is to seek others.
Call a friend and go for a walk or coffee. Organize a potluck. Engage with the person at the store or coffee shop. Call or write to someone you have not talked to for a while.

Centering Practices
-
A 10-minute practice is easier to do when associated with something you already do daily.
Think about your feet on the floor and sense the length of your spine while brushing your teeth.
When you first sit down at your desk, take three long breaths through your nose, feel your feet on the floor, and track how your breath moves in your whole body.

Create a Daily Ritual
-
Make yourself a cup of your favorite beverage with your favorite flower essence/elixir and engage your senses: smell your tea/coffee brewing, hold your cup and feel the warmth on each of your fingers and palms of your hands, watch the movements of the water and the steam rising from your cup. Take the first sip slowly and let your tastebuds explode with joy as you drink.
