Hello First name / friend!

There's a destination that has been growing in popularity lately – even earning the title of the 'best country in the world' in the Condé Nast 2023 Readers' Choice Awards. Any guesses?

If you guessed Japan 🇯🇵, you're correct!

(If you guessed somewhere else, we'd love for you to hit reply and share your guess!)

This dynamic and unique destination presents a wildly juxtaposed setting: deeply held traditions side-by-side with cutting-edge technology. Ancient temples and skyscrapers. Vibrant cities and revered natural settings.

Japan is not a destination that can be conquered easily. Even Anthony Bourdain is quoted as saying that he had barely scratched the surface of Japan after numerous visits.

"Japan is endlessly, endlessly interesting to me," he said. And even after going on nine filming trips there, "I don't think I've even scratched the surface and I don't think I ever will."

If exploring this complex country is on your radar, this newsletter will provide the smallest of samplings. For a bigger picture, you know where to find us, First name / friend!

Oh, and if you ever find yourself with a long layover in Tokyo, don't miss the chance to go strawberry picking 🍓

CIAO FOR NOW,
Melissa

Destination Overview
JAPAN
Can you picture yourself wandering through the cherry blossom-lined streets of Tokyo?

...after indulging in a meal prepared with seasonal ingredients, paired with fresh sake, and no agenda other than exploring this magical country.

Experience the magic of Japan's cherry blossom season in spring, where the entire country is awash in delicate pink blooms. Stroll through iconic spots like Ueno Park in Tokyo or Maruyama Park in Kyoto, and join in the local tradition of hanami (flower viewing) picnics under the blossoming trees.

Travelers with a penchant for history can dive into the rich past of Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Explore stunning temples like Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vermilion torii gates. Wander through the historic district of Gion, where traditional wooden machiya houses and geisha culture transport you back in time.

Discover the natural wonders of Yakushima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This subtropical island is home to some of Japan's oldest trees, including the ancient Jomon Sugi. Hike through the mystical rainforests, marvel at the lush greenery, and experience the serenity of this untouched paradise.

And of course, foodies will be in paradise, with opportunities to savor sushi in Tsukiji, ramen in Fukuoka, and traditional kaiseki meals in Kyoto. Japan's culinary scene is a delightful adventure, from the bustling street food markets of Osaka to the refined Michelin-starred restaurants in Tokyo. Don't miss trying regional specialties like Hiroshima's okonomiyaki or Hokkaido's fresh seafood.

Wondering when to visit?

Spring (March to May) offers pleasant weather and the breathtaking beauty of cherry blossoms, making it a perfect time for outdoor activities and hanami festivals. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect crowds.

For a more budget-friendly experience with mild weather, consider visiting in autumn (September to November). You'll enjoy smaller crowds and the stunning autumn foliage that paints the landscape in vibrant colors.

Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, but it’s a great time to experience Japan's lively festivals and beach destinations, which are among the best in the world.

Winter (December to February) brings cold weather and snow in certain regions, ideal for those interested in winter sports or the enchanting illumination displays and hot springs.

Culinary Delights in Kyoto

Indulge in a traditional kaiseki meal, a multi-course dining experience that showcases seasonal ingredients and meticulous preparation. The city's historic tea houses provide the perfect setting for a Japanese tea ceremony, where you can savor the rich, umami flavors of matcha while learning about the cultural significance and rituals behind this ancient practice.

Nature's Beauty and Hot Springs in Hokkaido

Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is a paradise for nature lovers and offers a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. In summer, explore the vibrant flower fields of Furano and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Toya. Winter transforms Hokkaido into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing in Niseko and witnessing the enchanting ice sculptures at the Sapporo Snow Festival. After a day of exploring, unwind in one of Hokkaido's many onsen (hot springs), such as Noboribetsu Onsen, where the mineral-rich waters provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience amidst beautiful natural surroundings.

Temple Tranquility in Nikko

Nikko, a small town north of Tokyo, is renowned for its beautifully preserved temples and shrines set amidst lush forests and mountains. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Toshogu Shrine, is the most famous, known for its ornate architecture and the iconic "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" monkeys. Another must-visit is the serene Rinno-ji Temple, where you can experience the peaceful atmosphere and stunning garden views.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL
father (88) & Son (55) Birthday celebration |  scotland the 152nd open
“Melissa planned the bucket list trip of a lifetime for my Dad and me to attend The 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland. Not only did she gather our wish list of items and make them all happen, but she added everything needed to make it possible for my Dad to make the trip and surprises we did not even expect!  It started with door-to-door service that made it seamless for my Dad to get through the large airports of San Francisco, changes at Heathrow, and whisk us through security & customs at every stop.

We began our adventure at the home of golf, St. Andrews, staying at the Old Course Hotel and a room right on the world-famous 17th "Road" hole. We enjoyed walks along the 17th and 18th holes in the mornings and captured a memorable photo on the iconic Swilken Bridge. The service and meals at the hotel's Road Hole restaurant and the local eateries were exceptional, with everything set up.  All we had to do was show up. Our journey continued at the Trump Turnberry Hotel, where we celebrated our 55th and 88th birthdays all week long. On the nights of our birthday, we even received specialized desserts - of course, mine with my favorite Oreo cookies and vanilla ice cream and where we were also serenaded by the entire dining room.  We were picked up and dropped off at the entrance to The Open, which made all the difference. We spent the week in the VIP hospitality suite with preferred seating in the grandstands, gourmet food, a meet-and-greet with a European tour champion and Ryder Cup Captain, and even a photo with the iconic Claret Jug!

My dad and I will always cherish and remember this incredible trip. Thank you, Melissa!”

Travel Tips
FOR VISITING JAPAN
🗣️ Learn Basic Japanese Phrases: Knowing a few phrases like "Arigatou" (Thank you), "Sumimasen" (Excuse me/Sorry), and "Konnichiwa" (Hello) can enhance your experience and show respect for the local culture. A phrasebook or translation app can also be handy.

đźš… Get a Japan Rail Pass: For travel across multiple cities, a Japan Rail Pass offers unlimited rides on JR trains, including Shinkansen (bullet trains), for a set period. It's a cost-effective way to explore the country and must be purchased before arriving in Japan.

🫶 Respect Local Etiquette: Remove shoes before entering homes or traditional accommodations, keep noise levels low on public transport, and use chopsticks properly. Familiarizing yourself with these customs shows respect for Japanese traditions.
