There are many causes of climate change. Transportation is among the worst of them. Transportation is “responsible for nearly a third of our country’s climate-damaging emissions” (1). This can be mitigated by commuting more sustainably.

Reducing emissions is within our control, and it starts with our transportation habits. Emissions can be reduced significantly by limiting unnecessary driving and using alternative transportation methods (1). Examples could include using public transportation, biking, walking, riding a scooter, etc.

According to the US Census, about 69% of commuters drive to work alone (2).  According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), public transportation can lower CO2 emissions in the environment by about 37 million tons per year (3). When converted to pounds, this is over 80 billion pounds of emissions saved from going into the environment. In other words, those who use public transportation contribute to saving billions of pounds that would have otherwise been wasted through driving.

One of the biggest goals is making it accessible and available for everyone. The US Department of Transportation USDOT commented on this issue that “low- and medium-income and minority households tend to have less access to convenient and affordable transportation options, and communities that are overburdened and historically underserved are exposed to a disproportionate amount of air pollution and other environmental hazards” (4). Everyone should be allowed to utilize public transportation to promote a healthier climate. If public transportation is available in your area, you can contribute to a healthier atmosphere that is free from harmful gasses by choosing to use public transportation or riding your bike.

Shifting from driving cars to commuting through public transportation, or other alternative methods, makes a big difference. Let's work together to make a sustainable environment by commuting with greener commuting habits.
