In the early 1980s, I met a fabulous woman who became one of the dearest friends I’ve ever had. She decided I should have clothing and accessories far beyond what I could afford. Although she could afford them, I felt uncomfortable accepting such lavish gifts. She gently reminded me that life isn’t about keeping score. What I gave, she insisted, was as valuable or more, as the money she spent on these gifts. She gave me a blue leather handbag with red trim—a one-of-a-kind piece shaped like a half watermelon. It was a clutch without handles and probably cost more than I earned in a month.
I chose to take that bag with me when I flew out to visit my parents. My daughter and son saw that the plane was pretty empty, so they sat in the back and played cards. I sat alone, content to enjoy the quiet.
A man about my own age, somewhere around 40, sat down in the empty aisle seat next to me. As we conversed, he revealed his full name. I turned to look at the bag, which was lying on my right side near the window, out of his sight. He was the creator of that very bag. In that moment, my mind was illuminated with a newfound understanding. I asked him, “Where do you get your creativity? How do you keep it going?”
With a knowing smile, he replied, “Lenny said to point the light in a direction.”
I knew exactly who he was referring to—Lenny was Leonardo, as in Leonardo da Vinci. I had read and still have a significant book on everything I could find about Leonardo da Vinci. He was the ultimate mind mapper, someone who understood the importance of using both hemispheres of the brain to create inventions. Look at this image and notice how words and images, like a mind map, demonstrate the non-linear and linear aspects of a cohesive network in our brain and nervous system—an essential part of our energetic field.
