My son has one of the greatest jobs in the world because he introduces kids to sports.
Not only that, he does what he can to make his students enjoy them.
I shouldn't be surprised that it comes naturally to him. By ten, he was obsessed with playing basketball, despite being the shortest boy on his team. To compensate, every day he'd go to the local neighborhood court and practice shooting from mid-court.
One day, near dinner time, Martin went looking for him. When our son proudly told him how his ongoing practice gave him a near-perfect shot, Martin bet him a million dollars that he couldn't do it again.
These days, if you spot Martin panhandling on your sidewalk, it's because he's still paying off that debt.
(In truth, during all these years, our son has forgiven his father's debt. Granted, he'll bring it up when he wants to tease Martin.)
Since then, my son hooked into a really fun coaching gig. Some of his students come from private schools. Others are at public schools with grants for after-school programs. All of the kids are excited to learn a new sport, or hone their skills in the one that is their passion.
One day, he came home with insights about a little girl who'd done her utmost best on the field. Recognizing this, he rewarded her with a sheet of colorful sports stickers.
Jubilantly, she exclaimed, “This is the best day ever!"
Hearing that made it great for him too.
The best high in the world is making someone else's day. Even a mere compliment can put a smile on someone's face.
It's the greatest high of all, isn't it?
