Step #3: Manage your mind.

How often are you listening to that little voice inside your head? You know, the one that always has an opinion and never seems to shut up? Otherwise known as self-talk, we often don't even realize we're following directions from that voice, but we usually are.

Step #3: Learn how to manage your mind by improving your self-talk.

The voice inside our head shows up as our internal belief system and running commentary on what's happening around us. What thoughts do you tend to think on a regular basis? What "messages on repeat" do you hear the most?

Becoming aware of your internal commentary (aka that little voice) is the first step toward managing your mind. We frequently operate on auto-pilot, so your self-talk is not always apparent. But when you actually start to listen, you might be surprised at what you find!

What are you telling yourself? Are your thoughts empowering and uplifting or bringing you down and keeping you stuck?

When you start to notice your thoughts and take them for what they are - just thoughts (and not facts) - you can start to rewire and reprogram your brain. Remember, you have the power to choose a better thought. When you interrupt your own patterns, that's where the beauty starts to happen. Small shifts turn into substantial change, progress, and growth.

Managing your mind and training your brain to work with you (instead of against you) is necessary if you're going to have the best semester of your life! No more negativity and limiting beliefs. You only grow stronger when you choose thoughts that support you and your goals.

Special note: We post a weekly mindfulness video called Our Daily Breathe ✨ every Sunday in our 365 community platform. Use it to learn how to focus your attention and work with your thoughts!

Reflection questions:
  1. What thoughts do you notice yourself having on repeat?
  2. Do you tend toward being positive or negative? Why do you think that is?
  3. What is one positive thought or belief you’d like to work toward and why?
Action step: Practice improving your thoughts with a Thought Ladder.

Notice when you're having less than optimal thoughts and see if you can pick a new thought that’s slightly better. You don’t want to make a huge jump, or your brain won’t follow along. Practice your new thought each time you level up a rung. Don’t beat yourself up if you keep having the same thoughts because it takes practice! You will improve with one thought at a time. You're learning the power of awareness and the power of choice. This is how you rewire your brain for the better.
