For Deborah Schmitt and her partner, Henry Schaefer, immersion in political causes is a shared endeavor--and one of the things that brought them together. After the two connected on a dating site but hadn’t yet met in person, Deborah found an article that highlighted Henry’s leadership in Plainsboro, his longtime home. “He was a responsible citizen involved in his community, and I was, too,” recalled Deborah, who had spent years in Long Hill Township as a three-time municipal committee member and was active in fighting overdevelopment, particularly in the Great Swamp Watershed.

Campaign Update
Campaign ads and videos on social media (Instagram and Facebook) are generating positive feedback from residents especially those focusing on safety (or lack of it) for pedestrians and for kids on bikes, as well as addressing overdevelopment. You can also watch on the campaign website. Behind the scenes, the Graner & Subervi team has volunteers phoning, emailing and texting voters, creating publicity and preparing for the Get Out the Vote push at the end of October.
Please join us for a “Military Meet & Greet” lunch Sunday, October 13 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The event will feature candidate Adam Subervi, a U.S. Marine Corps officer, with special guest speaker Shanel Robinson, a retired Staff Sergeant and Avionic Specialist in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Shanel is running for re-election to the Board of Somerset County Commissioners. The lunch will be held at the Red Oak Grille in Basking Ridge.
Working and socializing with each other more frequently is one of the BTDC’s goals to build a stronger and more effective democratic presence in Bernards Township. Whether we meet for a fun evening social, a viewing of the presidential debate, attend the Somerset County Democratic Committee Gala or a mailing session in someone’s home, we do get to know each other well. And we do have fun while meeting more new people and getting the party’s work done.
Opportunities to become involved and have some fun are plentiful this October. Please attend our next open meeting at the Bernards Township Public Library, 10/8 at 7pm to learn more about how you can contribute to our efforts.

Thank you to those who joined the Township memorial service on September 11, including among others, our candidates Liz Graner and Adam Subervi, and County Commissioner Sara Sooy. The loss experienced by one of my longtime friends in town, Theresa Creedon, was the story shared of families who lost loved ones in the wake of the attack on the World Trade Center. Theresa’s brother was a Port Authority policeman who was killed in the line of duty, and another brother who escaped from his office in the World Trade Center, later died of illness from the event. Theresa’s family, among other impacted residents, were present and reminds us that it’s important to continue to reflect upon and honor those who lost their lives.
