A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
I'm still thinking about my visit to Winston-Salem's newly renovated greenhouse in Reynolda Village this week. I have many happy memories of visiting Reynolda Gardens as a child, and I still visit about once a week. In fact, many of the photos I share in The Leaflet are taken there. |
|
The greenhouse, built in 1913 by the Lord & Burnham company for R.J. Reynolds and his wife, Katharine, has been closed for over a year during renovation. The original steel structure remains, but the glass has been replaced. When the greenhouse and the attached welcome center reopened this week, I just had to visit!
If you ever find yourself in North Carolina, you really must stop by this magnificent greenhouse. Let me know if you doâI might just go with you.đ |

My Green Thumb Beginnings |
|
Yep, thatâs me in the blurry photo below, about three years old, sitting in the dirt of my grandparentsâ community garden with a packet of seeds in hand. My grandmother was an expert gardener, and Iâm pretty sure thatâs where my own love of plants began. |
|
This old picture got me thinkingâgardening is a lot like the work we do as proofreaders and editors.
Just like in a garden, weâre constantly planting seeds. Maybe itâs learning a new skill, connecting with others in our field, or trying out a different tool. Whatever it is, weâre putting in the effort, even if we canât always see the growth right away. Sometimes it feels like things are moving slowly, doesnât it? But just like those tiny seeds, the work we do takes time and care to flourish. With a little patience and persistence, those seeds will sprout.
What seeds are you planting in your career right now?
Maybe youâre sharpening your skills, building relationships, or reflecting on where you want to grow next. Whatever it is, keep at it.
Growth takes time, but when it happens, itâs so worth it. 𪴠|

Favorite LinkedIn Posts This Week: |

Here are three posts I enjoyed reading on LinkedIn this week (shared with permission): By the way, if you're on LinkedIn, I'd love to connect! |

I apologize for the subject matter in this screenshot, but it's important to know the difference between âbaggyâ and âbaggie.â
âBaggyâ means loose-fitting (often referring to clothes). A âbaggieâ is a small, resealable plastic bag for storing items like food or small objects. đĄ Catch of the Week screenshots come from my transcript proofreading. I can't change what a person said, but I can make sure words are spelled correctly and punctuation marks are in the right spots. If you're interested in learning more about transcript proofreading, I wrote an article about it here. |

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor: |
|
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked: - What type of content do you proofread or edit?
General documents, blogs, educational and web content - Did you complete training for proofreading or editing?
I'm currently working on a course with Proofread Anywhere. - What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing work?
My favorite thing about proofreading and editing is the satisfaction of helping others communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. It's rewarding to see a piece of writing transform into its best version, making it more engaging and impactful for the reader. Plus, I enjoy the challenge of spotting errors and refining text to improve its overall quality. - What causes you the most frustration in your work?
When clients provide vague or conflicting feedback, it can be challenging to understand their expectations and make the necessary revisions. - What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
Take your time. Rushing through a document increases the risk of missing errors. Allocate sufficient time for thorough proofreading.

You might need a magnifying glass to see the new fronds on my plumosa fern (also called an asparagus fern). This plant loves the indirect light in my kitchen window. 𪴠|
