VOL.13
BUILDING A JOY-FILLED CREATIVE BUSINESS

Want to know something I did in my business that lost me a lot of money but was still a great move?

In my first year of selling my work at in-person events I took part in every event that I could: vendor markets, craft shows, farmers markets, pop-ups, festivals, and trade shows. Some of these were a success (yay!) and some of them I didn't even break even (super bummer).

I did this for two reasons:
1. I needed to learn who my ideal customer was and…
2. I wanted to learn where to find them.

Taking part in a variety of events was the key🔑 to helping me figure this out. Then, in my second year I knew who my ideal customer was and what kind of events to book.

In hindsight this was a great business move because I learned so much - BUT it took a WHOLE YEAR for me to do this which is a lot of time and theoretically, a lot of money lost💸

So, if you fancy pressing ‘fast-forward’ and skipping past the months of losing money like I did…the book I've been writing might be for you. It's called CRAFT MARKETS: The Ultimate Success Strategy and inside I share everything I've learned from nine years of selling my work at craft markets, and from hosting them.

MAKING THINGS: Work
I've been dealing with the extra stress of this busy season by taking more walking breaks. It seems weird that I can be MORE productive by taking more breaks but it is totally working.

I know that when I spend time outside (and for me - especially walking) helps clear my head and make things feel doable.

I'm learning to recognize when I start to feel crabby or feel overwhelmed by my to-do list and tell myself ‘it’s time to lace up your shoes and go for a walk." Even 15 minutes makes a big difference and I find I am happier, feel energized, and am better able to focus when I get back to work.

HELPFUL TIP
💃🏻💃🏻 DELETE THE WORD JUST 💃🏻💃🏻

When I help my students learn to write and talk about themselves with confidence, the word I often hear from them is ‘just’.

“I just make baby clothes”

The word just unfortunately belittles you and your work. I was reminded of this today when I I found myself using it in my Instrgam stories and corrected myself. I said that Tracy was ‘just a best friend' which right after I said it I realized - it makes her sound unimportant to me. When in reality, a best friend is SUPER IMPORTANT.

The same as what you do and make is super important.

“I make baby clothes”
or even better:
“I sew bright and colourful baby clothes for fun families.”

👉🏼See how when you get rid of the word just - everything seems better and and more meaningful?

Tracy is not “just a best friend”, she is “an amazing best friend whom I deeply value.”

Book Cover
Thanks for your feedback! The Linen background cover was the winner and I have to say, I think I also prefer the simplicity of this cover.
