Greetings Barre Bae!

Halloween always marks the beginning of a busy holiday season for my family. I hope you are finding ways to take care of yourself and continue to move in ways that feel good to you.

This week we're wrapping up OctoBARRE, making schedule adjustments for the time change, and talking about what you WON'T hear from me during the holidays.

weekday class
shifts

You've probably noticed recently that our daylight hours are waning as the seasons transition. Though it's been so beautiful to watch the sun set and wrap up classes under the stars these past few weeks, once Daylight Savings ends on Sunday, it'll be dark before weekday classes even start!

As I prepare for how to teacher in person classes in the fall and winter months, I will be temporarily moving Tuesday and Thursday classes to online only. Please note this when registering for classes starting this Thursday. Saturday classes will remain hybrid.

Please note the following schedule changes for this week only:

  • There will be no class today, October 29. I'm heading out of town to host my first wellness workshop!

  • Thursday's class will be only 40 minutes, and start at 4:30pm, not 6:30

Diet culture messaging you won't be receiving from FBW this holiday season

I want to get a jump start on countering the info you're probably going to receive next month around eating and movement during the holidays.

It's pretty much inevitable that you will soon be inundated with messaging perpetuating diet culture that will try to have you feeling guilty about enjoying Halloween candy this week, feeling like you need to work out extra hard to “earn” your holiday meals with loved ones in November and December, and then pushing you to quickly make resolutions to change your body as the new year draws nearer.

Let's all just take a beat so we can remember…

FOOD IS MEANT TO BE ENJOYED
01
Yes, we all need to consume food to nourish our bodies and give us energy to live life, but it's also meant to be enjoyed. Holiday food, in particular, is special and usually only eaten a few times a year. Counting calories or monitoring servings takes all the joy out of these special dishes and directs our attention away from loved ones and quality time.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO EARN YOUR FOOD
02
I'm sure you'll see classes in the coming weeks targeted at “burning off” or “earning” those holiday meals. Eating is a basic human need that no one needs to earn. We move our bodies because it's fun, to feel strong, and for the endorphins. We do not move our bodies to counter what or how much food we eat.

IT'S OK TO
TAKE BREAKS
03
As much as I encourage consistency with your movement over the holidays (to combat stress and the winter blues), I am an equal supporter of resting and properly celebrating without guilt. Family gatherings and holiday parties may throw off your training schedule a little and that's ok. That doesn't mean you shouldn't eat your bestie's Señorita bread because you missed your Saturday barre class!

GIVE YOURSELF GRACE
04
Grace is a word I feel I say a lot, but that's because it can be applied to almost every situation! The truth is, you are going to eat things you don't normally eat and you will miss some scheduled workouts in the coming months. No one is going to remember that you went to Pilates five days a week during the holidays. Also, winter is a time to rest and slow down a little. It's natural to want to move less and be cozy this time of year, just don't stay away too long, I'll miss you!
