GETTING REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE

Being tied to a local non-profit shows them how they can contribute beyond their high school years

Not every high school teenager is willing to get up early on the weekend to pick up trash at a local park. The group of students at Roosevelt High School who are part of the 808 Cleanups club are driven by a sense of community and the desire to make an impact.

“When people pass by the freeway and see less invasive plants, it makes them feel happier and that makes me feel happier" explains Li, Vice President. Club members want to inspire others to have the same level of respect for their neighborhood spaces. Oscar, club Historian, says volunteering makes him a better person, and he thinks more people should go out and help the community.

For members Madoka and Devon, being a part of the group is what makes it special. It's a great way to meet others and get work done as part of a team instead of picking up trash alone. They can feel the difference their contribution makes and like the attitude of mindfulness that continues after the cleanup.

Rylan, a junior who joined this year, appreciates the real-world experience. He knows the skills and knowledge he picks up through the club are assets he'll use in the future.

Jay Lee is the club advisor and plans out the sites each month. He follows the same principles as 808 Cleanups and thinks his club stands out at school because it's the only one with a connection to a larger organization. They have a network of support, access to tools, a unique way to earn community hours, and a front row seat to how a real-world nonprofit operates.
