Hi friend,
After stealing more than my share of Reese pumpkins from my kids' Halloween baskets last night, I awoke feeling a little sugared out. 🍬🍬🍬
Since we went double neighborhoods, we have at least triple the candy this year – ooof.
So, here we are in November, which leads me to a super special offer I've been cooking up for you 🍞🧁🎂
It's not quite done baking, but will be soon so I wanted to put it on your radar.
BUT FIRST, LET ME GET REAL WITH YOU…
Most writers come into the pitching space thinking their ideas work at face value.
They think they only need to write & send the pitch out. Boom.
But those people don’t get very far because they haven’t mastered what I’m about to tell you...
They're pitching TOPICS not STORIES.
It’s easier than digging deep, that's for sure.
But, truly good pitches require you to:
✔️ Uncover hidden angles
✔️ Find personal story gems
✔️ Unearth data no one else has
✔️ Spot the ironic connections or trends
What's the difference between at TOPIC and a STORY?
- A TOPIC is a broad idea, like “social media’s impact on mental health” or “how remote work changes productivity.”
It's a starting point, but it lacks specificity and direction.
- A STORY is a specific, well-defined angle that answers the questions:
- "What's new, insightful, or surprising here?"
- "How does this affect readers?"
A STORY would be, “Why Gen Z workers are thriving in remote jobs by creating digital ‘watercooler’ spaces for socializing.”
This pitch turns the general topic into a unique, timely angle with human interest and relevance.
Editors seek pitches that present:
➡️ a unique take
➡️ uncover something surprising, actionable
➡️ something deeply relevant to their readership
This signals a narrative that will engage readers, not just inform them.

When I started pitching, I had no idea what I was doing.

The ideas began to flow.
The editor’s stopped ghosting.
