At the recent Jr. High Blast retreat at Imago Dei Village, the chilly autumn night sent us into our cozy chapel for our evening worship. A group of around 50 Junior High students from various congregations had just arrived and we're quickly jumping into the camp experience. For some, this was their first taste of camp; for others, it felt like a familiar second home. As gathered together in the pews, the group began singing âSanctuary,â a simple yet beloved song that often closes the dayâs adventures.
Among the voices was a boy who had attended camp before. As the melody settled into a rhythm, he began to sing harmony lines. It was a part he knew well, even though the staff hadnât introduced it that evening. Sensing the significance of the moment, camp staff gently joined him, giving his harmony confidence and support.
The new campers continued to sing the melody, bringing a fresh simplicity that blended beautifully with the harmonies. In that tender moment, âSanctuaryâ became more than a song; it became a demonstration of the campfireâs essence: no matter how many times youâve been to camp, thereâs always a place for your voiceâand a spot at camp that's just for you. It was a reminder that camp isnât just about activities or games. Itâs a place where new friendships spark, returning campers find a sense of belonging, and everyone, no matter how they join the song, is part of something sacred.

Refilwe enjoyed her second summer at Pine Lake Camp, with some new certifications and leadership skills, and the same warmth and wonderful sense of humor. She is currently narrowing down her University search, and we hope sheâs looking stateside! Her cabin groups had amazing bonding experiences this summer, and she is renowned for her legendary skills at telling campfire riddles!
Alexis Aviles Chim - Yucatan, Mexico
1st Year on Staff at Pine Lake Camp
Alexis made a difference with his ability to see the uniqueness and joy of each individual Camper. He moves numbers, as he studies to be an accountant, he moves the people around him, as a ministry leader, and he moves like a force of nature when he dances. We are so glad we got to see Alexisâs patience and commitment in his first summer at Pine Lake Camp.
