Hey First name / friends!

This month marks a pretty HUGE milestone for me and my students in The Art of Collections. October was our first month together, which means that many of my students have created their very first collections!

I put this program together so surface pattern designers and emerging artists could get the support and accountability they need to grow their art businesses, and I’m blown away by how much progress they’ve made in just one month.

Aside from all of the educational content, business advice, and supportive community, students are encouraged to create one collection per month based on a strategic prompt I provide. After all, taking action is the key to growth as an artist! 🚀

And the results were sooooooooo impressive.

I have a fun challenge for you later in this email, but first, I want to highlight some of my amazing students and share their gorgeous collections after just one month in the program!

Taryn Kathleen
Taryn's Big Win 🎉
Getting feedback from Cat & the community to create her first real collection! Plus she wove a meaningful story of her experience during the east coast hurricanes into this beautiful, personal collection.

"I can’t begin to say how grateful I am for this course - even after just one month. The direction, course materials, peer support, zoom calls, Q&A and feedback have literally upended the way I’ve been designing for years - which was haphazard at best. This is my first real collection instead of doing disjointed “one offs” - and I can’t wait to pitch it to companies! Thank you all for the feedback while creating this!"

“I thought I knew most of the things about collections making, since I’ve been learning about it for the last 2 years, but not until this year do I feel connected to my style and ready to push harder to get out of my comfort zone. I needed some accountability and clear goals, so knowing that I “need” to finish a collection in one month gives me a clear vision of what I need to do during the month. Thanks Cat and everyone for your suggestions!”

"I’m so grateful for all the advice and help you have given me in just this one month of the course. It just blows my mind on how much I’ve learned. I couldn’t have developed a collection like this without it. Listening to the other critiques has also been invaluable. I’m so looking forward to the next 11 months working with you and everyone else in the community! Thanks again!"

And these amazing collections are just the tip of the iceberg! I am BURSTING with pride at all of the incredible collections my students are making. We have had over 50 students share their final collections from month one in our community and more are on the way!

The Art of Collections will open again for enrollment in 2025. Make sure to get on the waitlist if you're interested in growing your art biz alongside a supportive community of artists!

Hot Air Balloons
How about a whimsical challenge this week? In one of my newest blog posts, I shared the importance of knowing what market you’re designing for when choosing motifs for surface design.

I gave examples of some motifs that work well in the children's space including rainbows, unicorns, animals, and hot air balloons!

I typically don’t design specifically for children's products simply because I’ve found my niche elsewhere, but designing for kids products is a great place to focus as a surface designer.

And designing for a younger audience doesn’t make your work any less sophisticated. In fact, it’s really smart if that’s something you want to target. There is huge potential in this market since most kids products include cute designs of some kind. It’s pretty rare to see onesies or kids bedding without a design or pattern. That means there is more potential for your art to get on those products!

This week’s challenge is to create artwork with a hot air balloon motif. And don’t shy away from this just because I shared that it works well in the children's space.

This motif can also do well on art prints, journal covers, stationery, and more! The sky’s the limit! (see what I did there? 😉)

Share your hot air balloon illustration on Instagram with the hashtag #CreateWithCatCoq and tag me @catcoq so I can see what you make!

Have a fabulous week!
