A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
Readers of The Leaflet know that I love visiting the public library. When I’m in the mood for a bright, modern space, I’ll drive 20 minutes to a nearby town. But when I just want to grab (or return) a book quickly, I head to the branch 0.3 miles from my house—yep, it’s that close. It’s small, a bit dated, and it smells weird, but I still stop by almost every week.
During my visit this week, I snapped a photo of their display area. Normally, it’s filled with books on an interesting topic, but this time, it was surprisingly bare except for one sign: “Please Be Patient: Our display on procrastination will be up soon.” 😆 |
|
When I asked the librarian about the display, he chuckled and said, “We put that up when we’re deciding on the next topic to feature.”
I laughed, but I couldn’t help but relate—I, too, struggle with procrastination sometimes.
Here are a few things we might be putting off as proofreaders and editors: - Creating a lead magnet for marketing our services
- Setting up a consistent social media posting schedule
- Starting that large proofreading or editing project we’ve been dreading
- Tidying up our cluttered workspace
How about you? Do you struggle with procrastination? Please reply and let me know what helps you overcome it. |

My 2-Minute Morning Habit |
|
Have you listened to Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day podcast?
It's a daily podcast where they share a word, its definition, and a bit of its history in just two minutes. It’s a fun way to expand your vocabulary.
I listen while I make my bed in the morning—it’s just long enough to complete the task. Before I hit play, I look at the episode’s title (the word of the day) and try to guess its definition. Then I listen to see if I got it right.
Do you have a favorite word-related podcast? I'd love to hear about it! |

Favorite LinkedIn Posts This Week: |

Here are three posts I enjoyed reading on LinkedIn this week (shared with permission): - When to say no to a freelance project: Allie reminds us that even if we're eager to take on freelance projects, we should consider our time, abilities, and boundaries before saying yes. We all need to read this post. ✨
- “Chase less. Connect more.” What a great approach to booking and working with clients! I encourage you to read Terry's post (and sign up to view a recording of his masterclass on this topic.) 💡
- Why educating your clients pays off: When clients understand how your services can meet their needs, they're more likely to hire you. One way to help them understand is through client education. Ciera has written some helpful articles on this subject. The links are in the comments on her post. 🧠
By the way, if you're on LinkedIn, I'd love to connect! |

Catch of the Week screenshots come from my transcript proofreading. I can't change what a person said, but I can make sure words are spelled correctly and punctuation marks are in the right spots. If you're interested in learning more about transcript proofreading, I wrote an article about it here. |

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor: |

Michelle Miller Proofreading |

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked: - What type of content do you proofread or edit?
Christian fiction and nonfiction (and clean fiction) - Did you complete training for proofreading or editing?
I completed Edit Republic's High-Level Proofreading and Copyediting Pro, which is now called The Editorial Business Bundle. - What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing work?
That's a hard one because there are so many things I love about my proofreading business! I guess I'd have to say the content I proofread. Because I work with both fiction and nonfiction, I'm always working on something new and different. Not only do I get to help my clients publish professional-looking books, but I also learn a lot from each document I proofread. - What causes you the most frustration in your work?
The most frustrating thing so far in my proofreading business is trying to find time to do admin tasks. I have a desk full of papers that need to be organized! - What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
Something I wish I'd known when I first started my business is marketing. Learn everything you can about marketing yourself, your brand, and your business. Don't overwhelm yourself, though, because there's a ton of information out there. Learn the basics and go from there.

I love how this photo shows multiple parts of my heartleaf philodendron. Can you spot the (1) aerial roots, (2) cataphyll, and (3) unfurled leaves? It's so fun watching things grow! 🪴 |
