How are you? I hope the last few newsletters have helped you by becoming more aware of the stress cycle. Today, I’m excited to share some action steps to help you navigate stress more effectively.

First, let’s explore seven general categories that can help move you from a triggered sympathetic nervous response (fight, flight, freeze, appease), through the response phase, and into recovery:
 
1. Breathing
The way we breathe sends signals to our parasympathetic nervous system to act accordingly. Slowed, deep diaphragmatic breathing activates this system, sometimes called ‘rest and digest.’

2. Physical Activity
It makes sense to put those stress hormones, such as adrenaline, to good use by engaging in physical activities, like going for a brisk walk or dancing to your favourite music.

3. Creativity
Being able to express yourself through art, writing, or other creative pursuits—like painting or journaling—has been shown to deactivate the stress response.

4. Emotional Release
We all know a good cry can do wonders, as can a good laugh. Allow yourself to feel and express emotions in a healthy way.

5. Physical Comfort
A comforting hug, a warm shower, or even wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket can signal safety to your body.

6. Rest
Good quality rest, such as restorative sleep, meditation, and hypnosis, all contribute to a healthy nervous system response.

7. Connection
Humans are wired to be social creatures. Meaningful connections with others calm our fight-or-flight response and ease us into rest and digest mode.

Next Steps:
  1. Consider activities. What are your top three activities from every category?
  2. Create a plan - I’ve created a worksheet to make this step a little easier for you. You can Download It Here.
  3. Fill it in. I’ve filled it in for myself as an example should you need guidance or ideas. You can find it at the bottom of the newsletter.
  4. Put it somewhere prominent—like your fridge or workspace.
  5. Make a commitment to review it when you notice signs of stress and take appropriate action.
