Here at Emerson winter has begun to make its presence felt, transforming the landscape as trees shed their leaves and the light takes on a softer, more ethereal hue. This season gently encourages us to pause, reflect, and deepen our connection with ourselves and the world around us.  In the words of the philosopher and spiritual teacher Rudolf Steiner: "The winter is the time of gathering in, of drawing inward, of finding warmth in the heart."

In this edition of the Emerson Newsletter, we reflect on the highlights of the past three months and look ahead to the opportunities for connection and growth that lie ahead in the coming months.

Sending warmest wishes to you and yours for a joyful Christmas break.

The team at Emerson

We are pleased to share that, following agreement by the Emerson College Trust Association at an Extraordinary General Meeting on the 10th October 2024, Emerson College is now officially part of the Ruskin Mill Trust.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter for Emerson which, through the alignment of the shared charitable purposes and activities of Ruskin Mill, and the financial security that the new arrangement has brought through shared resources, means that Emerson will be expanding its work into the future with new vitality. There is a newly appointed board of trustees, with Aonghus Gordon OBE (Founder and Co-CEO of Ruskin Mill Trust) as chairperson and Martin Leach serving as deputy chair. You can read more about our dedicated board members on the Emerson website.

One part of the new work is via the undertaking a genius local process which has already started and will
conclude over the coming months. This insightful process will deepen our connection to Emerson as space and place across time, as we journey through the history and observations connected to the four kingdoms of mineral plant animal and human activity.

The Ruskin Mill team is also busy planning the development of the Ashdown Garden School which will be situated at the Rachel Carson building. This innovative new school will offer students with special educational needs a learning environment that provides a therapeutic curriculum and an experience which is embedded in caring and working for the land, animal and the pursuit of craft.

As Rudolf Steiner once said “the forces of change are the forces of the future”.  Together we are committed to holding the vision and transformative work that Emerson provides towards an evolving future.
