A PLUTO VIGIL B-SIDE
Secrets of the Sabian Symbols
with Xenia Viray
This piece was originally written for Day 09 of Pluto Vigil, but Pluto asked me to create something entirely different, so I wanted to share this with you to support you in today's transition last day of Pluto in Capricorn to Pluto in Aquarius.
If you want to join the Vigil, you can do that here.

Devoted Community,

We are in the final day of the final moments of Pluto moving through Capricorn. I hope the rituals we have been doing in community  have been clarifying your relationship with Pluto. I hope our attention and awareness are bringing more grace and care to this time.

As I was preparing for the vigil I remembered something the astrologer Jules Ferrari of Golden Nature told me in a reading - she pointed out to me that the Sabian symbol for 29 of Capricorn is “A woman reading tea leaves.”

What are Sabian Symbols?
Sabian symbols are sets of words that symbolize the energy of each degree in the zodiac, co-created by Marc Edmund Jones, an American astrologer and spiritualist, and the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler in 1925.

I have always had an affinity for them, though some of the cultural references are worded in awkward dated ways. These symbolic poems are entry points into the energies of each degree.

The Story of Capricorn to Aquarius told by the Sabian Symbols

In the Sabian Symbols, every five degrees has an umbrella theme; the last five degrees of Capricorn have the theme of mastery. When Pluto moves into Aquarius, the theme of the early degrees is balance.

Here are the stories of the Sabian symbols connected to the last degrees of Capricorn and the first degree of Aquarius.

Capricorn 29: A woman reading tea leaves (From 28-29 degrees)
This energy speaks to the need to be discerning in our divination practice, to sift fantasy and delusion from truth and wisdom.

James Burgess writes of this degree,

“As above so below, all is connected to, and mirrored by, all else. It becomes trite to the occultist as a concept but to the realised being it is their main purpose – to see beneath form, facts, feelings and fear. These are all aspects of the glamour that we falsely see as reality and which cover the truth beneath. And that truth is the pattern that interconnects everything everywhere and always. We find the term seeker needs to be updated to troubadour – “I have found”. We have learned how to see clearly.”

Capricorn 30: A secret business conference (from 30 - 0 Aquarius)

This degree brings awareness to the necessity and implications of working in powerful alliances out of the public eye.

James Burgess says,  “The extent to which we are able to control our situations largely depends upon the nature of the relationship with the individuals that comprise our inner circle. There is a need for a deep level of rapport, and also, through appropriate gentle confrontations, the ability to establish a high degree of authenticity.”

Aquarius 1: An Old Adobe Mission*
I acknowledge missionary work is problematic.

This symbol speaks to the importance of durability, lasting values, and building structures that support a sense of belonging both materially and spiritually.

“Major works require group endeavour…” says James Burgess. “Thousands of years ago, Stone Age [people] created features that were very difficult to make – stone circles and Stonehenge for example – that were clearly used for worship and ceremony, and they show that that aspect of life was very important indeed to them… We might ask of ourselves, ‘Does our own set of values motivate us powerfully enough to create something sufficiently lasting that it outlives us?’

Sabian symbol practitioner Lynda Hill says the potential of this energy is building a “safe and comfortable place to live, work, pray and practice our spiritual lives [where] [r]elating is not about control, but acceptance and reverence of each person’s divinity."

Other expressions of this energy include creating civilizations born of natural elements and sanctuaries for learning. The shadow of this energy is dogmatism, pushing one’s beliefs, taking over, cults, indoctrination, and feeling one has all the answers.

Putting the Story Together
In summary, Pluto is moving through the degrees of discerning spiritual messages, creating alliances out of the public eye, and building new spaces of belonging that support us materially and spiritually - while being highly aware of the potential for a loss of connection to reality, a lack of transparency, and dogmatism.

I share this with you because when I looked these up with Kate Belew in a conversation, their relevance was eerily relevant. Then again, how often can we be surprised by the wisdom transmitted by stars and humans alike?

Your Ritual: Creating Your Own Sabian Symbols
by Xenia Marie Ross Viray

Astrologer Dane Rudhyar was a devoted scholar of the Sabian Symbols. He found a letter about the process Elsie Wheeler and Marc Edmund Jones used to create them.

“Marc Jones took Miss Wheeler in his car to the San Diego park and stopped in a quiet place. He had with him a pack of 360 small index cards; each card was blank except for a very small, hardly visible marking at the extreme top right corner indicating a zodiacal sign and degree: for example, Aries 1, Aries 2, Aries 3, etcetera. Marc Jones then began to shuffle the cards thoroughly, and kept shuffling them throughout the operation. He then took one card at random, and without looking at the small marking, so that neither he nor Miss Wheeler could know which zodiacal degree was noted on it, asked her what she saw. Apparently a scene flashed to her inner vision; she described it quickly and Marc Jones made a brief pen notation of what she said. These notations are reproduced exactly in Marc Jones's book.” - Dane Rudhyar

The Ritual:

You will need 4 index cards of four half sheets of paper.
You may wish to do this in front of your altar.

Write very small on the top right corner of 4 small pieces of paper or index cards the degrees of Capricorn 29, Capricorn 30 Aquarius 1, and Aquarius 2.

Fold the papers so you aren’t able to see what degrees you have written.

Close your eyes calling in the energy of your higher self, guides, guardians, intuition or whatever you want to work with, intending that the messages you receive be for your highest good and the highest good of all.

Shuffle the cards or papers with the degree markings face down.

As you focus on the center of your heart, keeping the papers face down, write a simple phrase of 4-10 words on each paper - be poetic, instinctive, and childlike. Do not edit and trust what comes up.

When you are finished. Interpret the symbolic phrase that you received intuitively as you might interpret a poem or a dream.

For example, if the phrase I wrote for one of the degrees was,’icy branches at the top of a tree before spring.’

Beneath I might write: Something long forgotten is being remembered as a period of rest finishes up and new life springs forward to support new creative ideas or access to new streams of emotion.

Do this for every page before flipping over the cards to see which degree they corresponded to for you.

Close your ritual by thanking the guides that supported you.

Use these cards as your personal anchors for the days ahead to better understand your personal relationship with Pluto’s journey in Capricorn and the beginning of Pluto’s time in Aquarius.
