The Story of Capricorn to Aquarius told by the Sabian Symbols
In the Sabian Symbols, every five degrees has an umbrella theme; the last five degrees of Capricorn have the theme of mastery. When Pluto moves into Aquarius, the theme of the early degrees is balance.
Here are the stories of the Sabian symbols connected to the last degrees of Capricorn and the first degree of Aquarius.
Capricorn 29: A woman reading tea leaves (From 28-29 degrees)
This energy speaks to the need to be discerning in our divination practice, to sift fantasy and delusion from truth and wisdom.
James Burgess writes of this degree,
“As above so below, all is connected to, and mirrored by, all else. It becomes trite to the occultist as a concept but to the realised being it is their main purpose – to see beneath form, facts, feelings and fear. These are all aspects of the glamour that we falsely see as reality and which cover the truth beneath. And that truth is the pattern that interconnects everything everywhere and always. We find the term seeker needs to be updated to troubadour – “I have found”. We have learned how to see clearly.”
Capricorn 30: A secret business conference (from 30 - 0 Aquarius)
This degree brings awareness to the necessity and implications of working in powerful alliances out of the public eye.
James Burgess says, “The extent to which we are able to control our situations largely depends upon the nature of the relationship with the individuals that comprise our inner circle. There is a need for a deep level of rapport, and also, through appropriate gentle confrontations, the ability to establish a high degree of authenticity.”
Aquarius 1: An Old Adobe Mission*
I acknowledge missionary work is problematic.
This symbol speaks to the importance of durability, lasting values, and building structures that support a sense of belonging both materially and spiritually.
“Major works require group endeavour…” says James Burgess. “Thousands of years ago, Stone Age [people] created features that were very difficult to make – stone circles and Stonehenge for example – that were clearly used for worship and ceremony, and they show that that aspect of life was very important indeed to them… We might ask of ourselves, ‘Does our own set of values motivate us powerfully enough to create something sufficiently lasting that it outlives us?’
Sabian symbol practitioner Lynda Hill says the potential of this energy is building a “safe and comfortable place to live, work, pray and practice our spiritual lives [where] [r]elating is not about control, but acceptance and reverence of each person’s divinity."
Other expressions of this energy include creating civilizations born of natural elements and sanctuaries for learning. The shadow of this energy is dogmatism, pushing one’s beliefs, taking over, cults, indoctrination, and feeling one has all the answers.
Putting the Story Together
In summary, Pluto is moving through the degrees of discerning spiritual messages, creating alliances out of the public eye, and building new spaces of belonging that support us materially and spiritually - while being highly aware of the potential for a loss of connection to reality, a lack of transparency, and dogmatism.
I share this with you because when I looked these up with Kate Belew in a conversation, their relevance was eerily relevant. Then again, how often can we be surprised by the wisdom transmitted by stars and humans alike?
