Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Julian Kraft |
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Julian Kraft, one of our club’s long-standing and cherished members. Julian was not only a passionate mountaineer but also a gifted poet whose words captured the essence of the mountains and the spirit of those who climb them. Among his many contributions to the club, his poetry stands out as a lasting legacy. One poem, "Ascent of My Head," resonates deeply with many of us. It speaks to the passion, struggle, and triumph we experience both on the mountain and within ourselves. His words remind us of the profound connection we share with the wilderness and with our inner journeys. As we reflect on Julian’s life, we honor his creativity, his dedication, and his enduring impact on the MCSA community. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and in the pages of our journals. Below is his poem, "Ascent of My Head," which we share in tribute to his life and his legacy. |

SAFETY TIPS FOR HIKERS & CLIMBERS |
The festive season is a fantastic time to explore our beautiful properties across the country. However, this time of year does bring some challenges that hikers and climbers should be mindful of to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience. Be Prepared for the Heat Summer in SA typically brings high temperatures and intense sun. Make sure to carry enough water (at least 2-3 litres) per person. Be sure to check whether the water on the trail is safe to drink prior to venturing out. Don’t forget sun protection; a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a high SPF sunscreen. Start your hike or climb early to avoid the midday heat. Stay Weather-Aware Summer thunderstorms on the Highveld are common, especially in the afternoons. Be sure to check weather forecasts before heading out and be prepared. If a storm approaches, avoid peak summits and descend to lower altitudes to minimize lightning risks. Watch out for Wildlife Summer typically brings more encounters with wildlife such as snakes and baboons. Stay alert whilst on the trail and take care not to disturb animals. Baboons can be aggressive in seeking out food, so keep food and snacks in sealed containers. If you do spot a snake on the trail, give it a wide berth. Let it be and don’t provoke it. It will most likely move away quickly. Crime Awareness Unfortunately, there is a heightened risk of theft and opportunistic crime in some areas especially over the festive season. Where possible always hike in groups, and avoid hiking alone, especially in less-populated areas. Leave unnecessary valuable items at home and keep phones and wallets out of sight. Know the hotspots and consult with the MCSA Patrolling Group for updates and info regarding any safety concerns. Be Prepared for an Emergency Always carry a basic first aid kit with you. Let someone know of your intended route and expected return time. Save the contact details of MSAR for the event of an emergency. |

JOIN THESE UPCOMING MEETS! |

On a sun-drenched Saturday morning, 16 of us set out from Bergheim to the top of Fernkloof. This short, steep hike left us sweating, making the descent, abseiling down the waterfall into the refreshing cool of the kloof below, a truly welcome reprieve. The day was spent navigating challenges with more abseiling, scrambling, and swimming. Opting for fun and unique approaches to obstacles, the group’s enthusiasm and mix of beginners and experienced kloofers made it a joy to lead. |
What better way to spend a sunny Sunday? A group of 12 set off on a short walk to the base of Mhlabatini, where the real adventure began. We made our way up the kloof, following the stream until the water disappeared. After a relaxing lunch, we retraced our steps back down. Hiding from the sun in the cool kloof, surrounded by great company, was a brilliant idea. A big thanks to the SEC (Caving Club) for lending us the rope ladder—it made things both easier and safer! |
